AI & Sustainability: What’s the Connection? | AI Sustainable Futures Summit on March 28.

in #technology6 years ago (edited)

or..... why should people who care about the health of this planet and its people care about the AI Sustainable Futures Summit on March 28?

The answer is simple. Building more sustainable societies will require solving epic business, economic, social and environmental problems that have defied solution for decades.

How can we create more food and get it to the people who need it? How can denser communities enhance the human spirit? How do we make our institutions, businesses and governments more efficient AND more resilient?

As Einstein said,

"We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

At the Summit, recognized leaders and experts from business, science, technology, finance, academia and government will discuss how they use AI and other new toolkits to accelerate the discovery and creation of solutions to the most important challenges facing humanity.

  • Making better-informed decisions about urban planning, housing, transit, and other needs

  • Creating more sustainable, less-stressful communities.

  • Maximizing the use of existing vehicles and creating faster, more efficient traffic patterns.

  • Optimizing our food supply from ground to table, even in difficult weather environments.

  • Making sounder decisions about natural resources, from minerals in the ground to fish in the sea: helping us plan more sustainable harvests, and more efficient, less harmful extraction processes.

  • Redefining “smart” for developing more resilient, people-first cities.

  • Designing and delivering continuous learning and leadership systems, for all ages.

AI: Job-Killer or Creator?

Fears about AI focus on its potential to erase jobs; machines can process data faster and more effectively than people.

But AI will also create millions of new jobs: more creative and worthwhile jobs, based on better planning and more focused human needs.

U.S. consulting firm Gartner forecasts that by 2020, AI will eliminate 1.8 million jobs, but create 2.3 million new ones.

"Robots are not here to take away our jobs,” says research director Manjunath Bhat. “They're here to give us a promotion.”

The problem has never been food or money. The problem has always been the distribution of assets. The world has plenty of everything, the only problem being that it is help in disproportionate amounts by certain groups of people.
What we need to change is the distribution of assets. Hopefully the development of technology like the blockchains will be the catalyst for this change. Until then, who knows?

The powers that be rig everything, THAT is the problem -- everything else comes AFTER that.

There is corruption in the whole crypto space too, but I am hoping it washes out and is less.

If a few dummies with good hearts actually make it big somehow, by HODL'g even, or inventing something and limiting the whale collusion EVERYWHERE in blockchain, we just might make it.

Hmm.. sounds nice. Does it cost to attend?

You know as much as me my man.

I am guessing we are not meeting this week?

Sorry, I have to punt on that for now. Had a bit of trouble thrown at me. :)

This conference sounds like a great idea.

I am heavily involved in sustainability issues here in FL. I have long thought about how technology can both help sustainability efforts (mostly through innovation and renewables) and how it can hurt those efforts. Technology is the unwritten chapter of sustainability.

Yep, well said.

We are writing that now.
