Saudi Arabia is the first country to grant citizenship to a robot. Sophia had already said during a live demonstration at the SXSW festival that she would "destroy humans", at the initiative of its creator David Hanson. She made more reassuring comments at the Future Investment Initiative event. She told Sorkin that she wanted to use her artificial intelligence to help humans "live a better life" and that "I will do a lot of good to make the world a better place."

When asked if the robots can be aware and know they are robots, she said :

"Well let me ask you this, how do you know you are human? I want to use my artificial intelligence to to help humans live better, like designing smarter homes, building better cities of the future, and doing my best to make the world a better place."

The company sold out of supply of 1,000 robots in less than a minute.

Thanks for bringing this up! I might be too much of a pessimist (or realist?), but I somehow still feel that that conversation was pretty much all scripted, even though they implied some part of it was not. I do find it cool and think it is very likely that AI/robots will be sophisticated enough to show the above with no outside input or planning in the not too distant future, but don't think we're quite there yet. It's a cool show, but not as big news as it's made out to be in the video (apart from the citizenship, which is probably just a publicity stunt with no actual effect on the robot or anyone else).
