A larger percentage of us has probably seen this in movies. The lady on the image is actually not real but science is making it seem like she's there. That's called an hologram.

A simpler definition for it is representing a 3D copy of an image. The process of doing this is called holography.

In the movie world, technology has moved far ahead, and we probably would be thinking if any of it will be real. Holograms are real, it has been existing, they can be made, you can create one.

Oh! Yes, you read that correctly, you can create an hologram with these steps.

  1. Trace four pyramid shapes on a paper and cut it out.
  2. Place each shape in a CD case, and cut each out. The case is what we need.
  3. Tape all four CD shapes together to form one hollow pyramid.
  4. The edge shouldn't be opened, so, cut out a rectangular shape to fill it up.
  5. Place the shape on your smart phone. Images on the screen will be projected in the hollow pyramid.
That's it, you just created an hologram. In case, you are not cleared, you can watch a practical video here.

Holograms have been existing ever since, it can be also be found in credit and debit cards. On cards it serves as security, it is made up of several images placed on each other, whenever this card is moved, the images tend to change, no matter how slightly the card moves.

Holograms have several images hidden in it, thereby preventing fraud. All the images definitely can't be scanned by any scanner.

Aside cards, it is present in passports, banknotes and some electronics.

All these are not real holograms. The general concept of hologram is to create a 3 dimensional image that's probably not within the environment. Floating images not static ones. Simply, creating a 3D object from a 2D projection.

An example of a real hologram can be seen in the movie "Kingsman, the Golden circle".

Most of the members in the meeting were not exactly available there. But a projection of each of them is what we are seeing. They are not within the environment, still, their presence is there.

The movie " Iron man" also illustrated the concept of holograms. Tony Stark was seen operating machines on air. What he was clicking was a floating projection from a device.

Creating these holograms seemed impossible. To create this, light must be generated in thin air. Scientists found this impossible. Making light to stop on air and making it viewable in all directions is what was needed.

Every part of the object needs to be visible to form a real hologram. These dream was pulled off by a research team led by Daniel Smalley, they made a system whereby little particles of cellulose were placed in a laser beam. This beam makes the particles moves at a high speed within a small area.

Although, the projections gotten were tiny little ones, but, in the future, we should probably be expecting large 3D images.

Nevertheless, there are great technologies that have been made that depicts the use of holograms.

DeepFrame
It's created by a company named realfiction. As depicted on their website. Deepframe merges the virtual and real world. DeepFrame is a 64 inched frame. When being looked at, a 3D dimension of the object projected in it is shown.

DeepFrame is now used in board meetings, members from different parts of the world can be projected in it making it look like they are actually present. It's more like what happened in Kingsman.
The device is quite expensive, it costs approximately $50,000.

HoloPlayer
Holoplayers are created by a company called looking glass.
The device is connected into a PC. When switched on, a 3D representation of the image is shown at the other side of the glass sheet. Every part of the image can be seen based on how you tint your head to view.

Other hologram technologies that has been made are;
HP ZVR made by HP, Navion created by Wayray.

This has shown that real hologram technologies we watch on movies is quite possible and might be available anytime soon.

Thanks for reading.

I'm welcoming you to a world of real holograms in advance.

Reminds me of project bluebeam!

That conspiracy theory?
It sure did.

Are holograms responsible for laser keyboards too?

Nice article BTW, you did well.

Yes. Laser keyboards are another applications of holograms.

Thanks for stopping by.

holograms really do make the interaction between man and machine more fun. i look forward to a time when we would be able to make "hologram video calls" i can only imagine how sleek it would be

Yeah.. Technology would get there I believe.

Holograms and the reality technology are really changing the entertainment industry....Nice work u've done here

Thanks for reading..

Interesting technology. I very well remember how it was used in Kingsman. Let me go and attempt to make my own hologram. Thanks for enlightening us.

I know of another hologram wrapped around in foils. But that one is found in cheques.. Mostly for security printing reasons because i have seen alot of it. An hologram machine was used for it to function as heat is applied. A thermostat is with the machine to control or regulates the temperature incase of overheating so as not to burn off the foil containing the hologram. If i can recall vividly one of the machine was called dimuken it is a german machine actually. We have another one which is the unigraphica hologram machine. Skipping that i think i have learnt few new things about hologram in 3D this time..Good job bro
I love the post
