Bluetooth wireless headphones and headphones are becoming more and more popular. Associated with smartphones, they free the user of the wired connection inconvenient and sometimes embarrassing. But these devices are penalized by a still limited autonomy, especially the totally wireless headphones like the AirPods of Apple, the WF-1000X of Sony or the Gear IconX 2018 of Samsung. But the latest innovation from Qualcomm should change the game.
The semiconductor manufacturer took advantage of the CES (Consumer Electronics Show) to present a new QCC5100 SoC (System on a Chip) which, it promises, will reduce the energy consumption of wireless audio devices by 65% compared to existing systems . This chip, compatible with the latest Bluetooth 5 standard, includes a quad core central processor, two 120 MHz audio signal processors (DSPs) and two processors dedicated to 80 MHz applications.

It also incorporates active noise reduction technology. Currently, the Sony WF-1000X 100% wireless headphones are the only ones to offer this option, but their autonomy is greatly reduced (about 3 hours). According to the use cases described by Qualcomm, a headset or a pair of Bluetooth headphones equipped with its QCC5100 SoC will be able to ensure, for example, 4 hours of music playback, one hour of telephone call plus 1.5 hours of standby time. . If you prefer telephony, it can give up to 3 hours in conversation, 1.5 hours of music and 1.5 hours in standby.
In addition, this SoC is natively configured to work with market voice assistants (Siri, Google Assistant, Cortana, Alexa) and biometric sensors integrated into audio devices that are used to track sports activities. According to Qualcomm, the first products equipped with this chip should appear around mid-2018.
