mmm... you mention that "awareness of our gut feelings" is part of intelligence, yet also say that we aspire to be less emotionally reactive. What's the difference?
Emotions are a fundamental part of how our neurological system makes decisions, whether we are aware of them or not. Many experiments have shown that an emotional response takes place just before our conscious "decision". It is one of the big lies that we humans should be more mechanical; it is the lie that props up the transhumanist (subhumanist) agenda.
What is true is that our emotional response should arise from the source, rather than being automatic reactions; but how can anyone tell the difference?
