What is LIFI?

Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) is a bidirectional, high-speed and fully networked wireless communication technology similar to Wi-Fi. The term was coined by Harald Haas[1] and is a form of visible light communication and a subset of optical wireless communications (OWC) and could be a complement to RF communication (Wi-Fi or cellular networks), or even a replacement in contexts of data broadcasting. It is wireless and uses visible-light communication or infrared and near-ultraviolet instead of radio-frequency spectrum, part of optical wireless communications technology, which carries much more information, and has been proposed as a solution to the RF-bandwidth limitations.[2]

So, what's the difference Li-Fi with Wi-Fi?


  • 100 Times Faster Then Wifi

Wifi = sending data using radio signals

Lifi = data transmission using light

Velmenni, an Estonian startup is testing a new standardization replacement for WiFi, which is named LiFi. The difference is quite simple. If WiFi uses radio signals, while LiFi uses light to transmit data. Lifi speed was 100 times faster than traditional WiFi, or can reach a speed of 100 Gbps.

LiFi term itself was first popularized by Professor Harald Haas of the University of Edinburgh, who demonstrated the technology at the TED conference in 2011. At that time, Haas shows a video stream using an LED light bulb. Haas says that in the future, billions of light bulbs can be used as a wireless hotspot.


LIFI is more secure then WIFI

 Provides entirely secure access. Where there is no light, there is no data.

LIFI using visible light communication (VLC) to transfer data. LED light bulb is transform into high wireless data transmitter. When light is on it transmit a digital 1 and when light is off its transfer digital data 0. Light switching very quickly, this give an opportunity for those LED.  All those operation required LED and controler that code data into those LED.  

LIFI light wave does not penetrated through wall, hence they can not be intercepted. 

While WIFI using radio wave that penetrated through wall, if someone with knowledge and bad intention they can misuse its.


  • LIFI Has Bigger Capacity, Avaibility and Efficiency

Wifi transmit data through radio wave, its very limited, expensive and only have certain range. New technology like 3G and 4G use a lot of radio wave spectrum, we running out of spectrum. Here is electromagnet spectrum data 

LIFI has 10.000 times more spectrum than radio wave, and light bulb already installed  everywhere, even  at the places where radio frequency communication is a problem, such as aircrafts or hospitals. So we does not need additional cable or wire to laid between one to another acces point. Its will make LIFI is cheaper and more efficiency.
