How can you learn to create artificial intelligence?
The Microsoft Summer School of Machine Learning for the third year is being held at the Petnica Research Station, and this year attracted 24 students of IT directions from technical faculties, which through different programming processes learn computers to independently conclude and discuss.

About 150 programs are organized for high school students in Petnica, the longest are those that are flying, which is on average for two weeks. "" We have a dozen programs for students during the year that we are implementing in cooperation with faculties, institutes and various centers, "said program director Nikola Bozic, adding that basic programs are scheduled for September, when nearly 200 primary school students will visit Petnica. Multi-year participants in petition programs and conferences can be nominated for student associates and thus be able to participate actively in the creation and implementation of educational programs, Petnica said.

Summer school seminars started on July 21 and last for nine days, and attendees leave for lectures every day, after which they remain in the workshops and apply theoretical knowledge in practical work on various projects.

Participants, one part of the lecture is held by Filip Panjević, deputy director of the Microsoft Development Center in Serbia, who introduces them to algorithms for machine learning for computer vision.

Although he did not have the authority to tell us more about the HoloLens project he was involved with, we talked with him about many interesting aspects of machine learning:

B92: What's the Difference Between Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence?

Filip Panjević: Artificial intelligence is every type of imitation of human intelligence by the machine. The notion of artificial intelligence is very broad and has different uses. Automatic tagging of images on Facebook is one of the types of artificial intelligence we use everyday. Similar algorithms are applied in sophisticated systems such as auto-pilots in planes.

Machine learning is one of the forms of artificial intelligence that allows machines to learn in the way a human is doing, analyzing examples, using large amounts of data, rather than being directly programmed.

• What are the goals and application of machine learning?

The basic aim of machine learning is to enable machines to "learn" themselves on the basis of examples, without the direct share of the programmer. It has the greatest application in areas for which it is difficult to write a program, such as speech recognition or face recognition, reading text and manuscripts from images, finding heart defects in the ECG, understanding genetic code, etc.

• Work on computer vision algorithms? What does that mean?

People use their eyes to get to know and understand the world around you. Computer vision is an area that aims to provide the machines with the same or even more advanced features using cameras. Computer vision algorithms make analysis of images and videos and find useful information in them. They now have a very wide range of uses - from self-steering vehicles, through the Hawk Eye system to tennis matches, to detecting skin cancer.

Participate in Petnica's Summer Machine Learning Program. What do students expect between 21st and 30th of July?

The first few days of the seminar were devoted to the introduction to machine learning. Every day, there are several lectures, as well as workshops on which practical exercises are conducted in the areas that were discussed on that day.

The other half of the summer school focuses on practical work. Students choose problems in the field of machine learning that will be solved independently or in smaller groups. In this period, lectures are held in the most current fields of machine learning.

Upon completion of the seminar, each participant should be able to use the acquired knowledge to solve a variety of problems and has excellent basics for further training in this field.

How young people in Serbia are interested in this field and what conditions do they have to deal with?

Machine learning is currently one of the most popular IT areas in the world and in our country, largely thanks to the great discoveries in the last 10 years. Students in Serbia have the opportunity to hear about machine learning at faculties, and with the help of various resources on the Internet, they can further improve themselves in this field. The aim of the seminar in Petnica is to create a community of young people who share similar interests in order to exchange knowledge and experiences and to transfer them further.

What does it take for anyone who wants to do it to deal with machine learning and artificial intelligence in general? What was your development path?

To handle artificial intelligence, a good knowledge of mathematics is required, and a bit of routine in programming, and you need to work in some of the current programming languages ​​such as Python or C ++. Sites like Coursera.com or Kaggle.com offer very good beginner courses, as well as the ability to improve and work for those with experience in machine learning.
