Fact behind Tears

in #tears7 years ago (edited)

I cried today!
I was having after-surgery pain of a surgery I did some years ago, I'd had osteonecrosis and I underwent a surgery.
Though this post is not about the surgery and the pain,it is about the tears, recently I've been fascinated by tears and teardrops, what exactly a single teardrop could be,the emotions laden in each tear and all.

our tear is a mixture of many emotions and passion @surpassinggoogle

What exactly happens when we cry?
A salty fluid full of protein, water, mucus and oil is released from the lacrimal gland in the upper outer region of our eyes, this fluid is our tears.
Secretion of tears is called tearing,(Lachrymation or Lacrimation),which oftentimes helps to lubricate and clean our eyes.
All tears (human tear) are medium by which we express internal emotions, sorrow, pleasure, love, laughter and even yawning are reasons why we shed tears.

In humans, the tear film coating the eyes which is known as the pecorneal film has three layer
•Aqueous layer
•Liquid layer
•Mucuos layer (mucin)

There are some fascinating things about our tears, those fluid that run down our face and smear our mascara, those fluids of emotions.

The tears are produced mostly by the lacrimal gland, located just above the outer corner of the eyes, blinking spreads the tears across the eye surface

Stuffy nose:
Our tears move into tiny openings in the eyelid called the puncta and through ducts to the nasal cavity, which is either swallowed or it becomes part of the nasal fluid, this explains stuffy nose when we cry
Waste removal:
Our tears serves the same purpose in the eyes as the blood does, it delivers oxygen and nutrients and help remove waste
Defense mechanism :
Out tears contains antibodies, enzymes and other immune components that helps in protecting the eyes against microorganisms
Vision:
Our tears helps in improving the image that forms on the retina by smoothing all irregularities on the surface of the eyeballs.
This clearly explains why people who have the dry eye disorder may experience blurry vision
Stress:
Crying has been theorized as a way the human body can rid itself of stress related chemicals, especially crying amongst people who care, this has shown to provide better emotional stability than holding back tears, ever tried it?

Do you know?
a) That there is a certain Chemical in the tears a woman cries when she is sad that leads men to be less sexual aroused, click here to find out

b) That all newborns come into this world all crying the same way, but as they grow up, society and culture affect their way of weeping, therefore different cultures have their different way of weeping

c) That when a person cries, and the first drop of tear comes from the right eyes,it's happiness, but when the first tear rolls from the left eye, it's pain, click here to find out more

d) That crying are not just for babies,As we grow up, we produce about five to ten ounce of tear a day, even if we cry or not

e) That there is a neurological conditurn called Pathological Crying and Laughing(PLC),that causes involuntary crying at inappropriate times.

Our tears are basically of three types :
•The Continous(basal) Tear:
This kind of tear is produced for the basic eye functions such as the eye lubrication.
•The Reflex(Irritant) Tear:
This occurs when the eye is exposed to cold, wind or any other foreign body.
•The Psychogenic Tear:
This is large related to emotional feelings.

Tear Disorder

  1. Borgorad's syndrome (crocodile tears) :
An uncommon neural regenerative subsequent to Bell's palsy or other damage to facial nerve in which the efferent fibers from the superior salivary nucleus is not properly connected to the nerves causing one to shed tears during salivation while smelling food or while eating.

  2. Keratoconjuctivitis Sicca(Dry eyes)

  3. Familial Dysautonomia:
Genetic condition associated with the lack of overflow tear during emotional crying

  4. Obstruction of the Punctum(Nasolacrimal duct) :
This can cause tear overflow onto the face, giving the appearance of constant psychic tearing.

Maybe there are more things about our tears that we still do not know, or that isn't in this post, please feel free to comment.

Wonderful scientific cum human emotional related post! You have well writing skill. I learned some facts about our body. Is animal and others insects are having lacrimal gland? Is they are tear? Crying is having lots of benefits.
