What is PLKN ??
PLKN (Program Latihan Khidmat Negara) or National Service Training Programme is a national service programme in Malaysia. It was initiated by the government in 2003. Under this programme, Malaysian youth who are 18 years old are selected at random for a three-month training stint.
During this time, the youths undergo physical training such as marching, hand-to-hand combat, abseiling, canoeing, survival training, first aid training and others. The youths also attend lectures in classrooms to learn more about the country’s history and they are also reminded of their sense of responsibilty and loyalty to the country.
However, the programme is not totally everything serious. Various games and activities are also held to enable the youths to make friends, interact harmoniously with one another, and develop a sense of commitment, unity and cooperation. The youth also get involved in community service. Together with their trainers, they visit orphanages, old folks’ jones and poot villages to help clean up the places, do simple repairs, talk and eat together with them.
The National Service is certainly moulding the youths into patriotic citizens with a strong character.
