The Famous Kolo Mee From Sarawak, Borneo, Malaysia
Every states in Malaysia have their own signature food. As for Sarawak, one of the very famous signature foods is Kolo Mee Or Mi Kolok. People always say that if you ever been to Sarawak and never tried this Kolo Mee, you've never actually been to Sarawak.
This Kolo Mee is a noddle dish which typically using the home made noddle and normally served with sliced pork meat, minced pork meat and some other ingredients such as fish cake, fish ball and vegetables. There are two "flavors", the white and the red ones. The read one is actually mixed with red sauce sauce and it give the dish a sweet taste. The white is the normal one.
This noodle looks very simple but according to those people who cook and sell it, only those with experience can cook it right. Apparently there some techniques and right timing of cooking it. I've tried to cook it myself and took many try to get the perfect one.
This dish is my most favorite meal at anytime any day. When I was younger, we used to have this for breakfast and supper especially after a whole night partying :D
If you ever visit Sarawak, you can find this Kolo Mee in almost every city throughout the state. It's hard to point out the shop or restaurant that sell the best one because there are a lot of them. But one thing for sure, the authentic one is the one that is being sold in Chinese coffee shop or restaurant. Other than that it is all improvised version. There are also the halal version for our Muslim friends, it doesn't taste the 100% the same as the authentic one but it does taste the same on certain percentage. That is because the ingredients they use is totally different, obviously but they're still using the same noodle.
I don't have the picture of the white Kolo Mee because my favorite is the red one and I had it everytime.
This is another version that is using Mi Poh. It has a different texture compared to the normal Kolo Mee. There are also some shops that will sale the Kolo Mee with a pork or seafood soup.
This dish normally served dry but you can ask for the soupy one if you prefer that more. The taste will be very much different though, it won't be the same. The soupy one is good for hangover :D
So, this is probably one of the many posts to come for me to introduce things on the place I am from. The are many other foods, places and other interesting things and I'll cover them one by one along the way.
I read somewhere that a new Steemians should introduce themself. I guess I found that article a bit late but I think it's not late to do it. So briefly, I'm Rodz, I'm from Sarawak, a Malaysian state in the island of Borneo. I love photography, video games, musics and many more. I was a blogger many years ago before I quit and just started again mid of this year. I blog at https://pansuh.com. I used to work in the jungle, helping to take care of the nature, managing it and helping to preserve it. The place I was working at that time was one of the last few natural habitat of the Orangutan in Sarawak. I was lucky that I was given a chance to help protecting their home. It was the best time of my life.
