Why You Should Be Watching Avengers: Infinity War on IMAX 3D

in #teammalaysia6 years ago (edited)

For over 10 years, when I hit the cinema. I would only watch on IMAX or wait for Blu Ray release. Okay, I did watched a few on regular cinema and there were so few I could remember them all:

  1. Source Code in GSC Mid Valley in Kuala Lumpur - felt like I was watching a film in VCD format
  2. Cloud Atlas in The Curve - it was a free screening and the visual and audio quality was worse than watching porn on an old Nokia phone.
  3. X-Men: Days of Future Past in MBO Galaxy Ampang - It was a 2D movie (so quality was decently sharp). But screen was tiny and there were too many children in the cinema. So it was noisy and I didn't enjoy it. This film wasn't shown in IMAX and I really wanted to try to watch a 2D movie
  4. Captain America: Civil War in GSC IOI City Mall. After watching the film in IMAX, I wanted to test the Digital Dolby Atmosphere (3D sound) + D Box (chairs that move and vibrate accordingly to the flow of the movie). Again, it was too noisy because cinema was filled with children. Digital Dolby Atmosphere + Dbox was still wasn't half as good as the one in IMAX.

Introduction to IMAX

IMAX is a complete cinema system that enhance the visual and audio experience. Every IMAX hall is customised, hence no IMAX cinema is identical (well, not that I am aware of). IMAX always emphasise on the experience and works closely with film directors and industry leaders to deliver their promise of experience beyond regular cinema. Over the years, they have expanded their global reach and updated their cinemas with the latest technology, winning multiple awards in the process

There is also a decent write up in Wikipedia

My IMAX Experience:

The very first film I watched on IMAX was Matrix Revolutions in West Edmonton Mall (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada). The script and movie was rubbish at best. But the experience was beyond amazing. I was instantly hooked. This link shows you the list of movies shown in IMAX cinema since inception in 2002. As you can see from the list, there were only less than half a dozen films per year shown on IMAX. As you could image, I would literally countdown to the day when new movies were released on IMAX. After late 2000, the list have grown significantly and I have watched almost half of the major blockbusters on the list.

Here is the list of IMAX Cinema I've been to:

  • West Edmonton Mall (Edmonton, Alberta, Canada)
  • Chinook Centre (Calgary, Alberta Canada)
  • Sunway Pyramid (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)
  • One Utama (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)
  • Sunway Velocity (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)
  • Melbourne Museum (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia)

IMAX in Malaysia

When I came back to Malaysia in 2009, the were no IMAX cinema anywhere in the country. There used to be one in Berjaya Time square but it was closed long before 2009. Then in 2011, I was so delighted to learn that Tanjung Golden Village Cinemas (better know as TGV Cinemas) signed a contract with IMAX Corp. First movie that was shown in Sunway Pyramid was Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Since then, TGV launched new IMAX cinemas throughout the nation (Penang, more venues in Klang Valley, Johor & Sarawak).

Me and my friends tried all 3 cinemas in Kuala Lumpur and Penang. And the best is still the one in Sunway Pyramid (I recommend sitting in the middle rows E, F or G, middle column would be 14 & 15). Reason why Sunway Pyramid is the best is because of the comfortable viewing distance from the seats to the screen. For the other 3, you the back rows have comfortable viewing distance but they are premium seatings or couple seating which you have to pay extra. Even then the back rows are greatly elevated which makes you feel like you are viewing from the upper rows of a stadium.

Why You Should Watch Avengers: Infinity War on IMAX:

  1. You see 26% more of the movie. Reason is because IMAX screen are much larger and can accommodate a larger format. Regular cinema will have no choice but to cropped. Read here for more details.

  2. Past blockbuster movies such as Transformers or Christopher Nolan's Batman series were partially shot with IMAX camera. Thanks to deep pocket from Disney, Avengers: Infinity War has a huge budget and thus had the entire film shot on IMAX camera.

  3. Not sure about Avengers: Infinity War, but most IMAX films in Malaysia do not have subtitles. I do not mind having English only subtitle but having both Mandarin and Bahasa Malaysia is not ideal to me as I won't need them. Also, I notice that there are less censorship.

  4. IMAX 2D or 3D are superb. I am never a fan of 3D shows but the digital enhancement in IMAX makes it a comfortable. Not true for all case such as the recent Ready Player One. But never had any issue with the Marvel or DC movies.

  5. Because of the price, there are usually very few children in the cinema. Nothing against children but when I pay RM 24 to RM 28 for a show, I deserve to immerse myself to the full experience of the movie.

  6. This is personal to me: IMAX Corp is a Canadian company based in Montreal. Nothing better for me than to support product of a Canadian company:)

For those of you who are not well versed with Marvel Cinematic Universe, you may want to watch all the films below that are in order of release.

Or you can just watch the 6 minute recap clip of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe before walking into the cinema.

Feel free to ask me any questions about Marvel comics or Marvel Cinematic Universe and I'll be happy to answer any of your questions. Enjoy the show guys.

Very long time I didn't watch movies in cinema already. Didn't know the price become this expensive.

You don't watch in cinema because you don't enjoy movies??

Don't have time for entertainment. ^^"

Serious?? You are busy with work? wives? children?

Busy with Steemit. :)

Well IMAX or not, I will definitely make some time to catch this much talked about movie. It looks set to be a major blockbuster hit

I believe Avengers is wort the watch even for those who isn't familiar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Perfect for family and friends too.... but if you are a fan of the MCU so far, Infinity War will be epic because everything that happened over the last decade is meant to lead to this very moment... But Infinity War is just part 1 and the 2nd part is coming 2 years from now.

OK! Avengers it is!

Bro. You are a moviegoer same like me. Always go for the best cinema. Hahahahaha

Hahaha... next time you come to KL, we should go watch a movie in IMAX

Fuyoh, this is freakin cool.

I didn't know no IMAX theatre is identical. You really know your IMAX.

Oh yeah.... I absolutely love my IMAX experience

The last time I watched an IMAX movie was

'The Dark Knight (2008)'.

It was a defining experience.

I didn't know it was only partially shot in IMAX.

Oh man.. it has been 10 years since you last watched IMAX then... you should go watch Avengers: Infinity Wars on IMAX, especially after you watch on a regular cinema

Ahahaha okay... Which theatre would u recommend?

Sunway Pyramid TGV (You can read my comments on the post for details why I prefer this cinema)
