Steemit can go down however the Steem Blockchain does not rely on Steemit.com as its just a Front UI which interfaces with the Blockchain. Other interfaces like busy.org, esteem app, steepshot , chainbb .. all interface direct to the blockchain and not dependable on steemit.com website.

what lukestokes says about it being ok if steemit.com goes down .. is because steemit.com does not host the blockchain alone, its also hosted by witnesses thru many servers across the globe. i as a witness also host a copy of the blockchain . so its like skynet in terminator movie. you can't take it down once its up and sync across the globe
