Asian Games Hockey Final (Malaysia - Japan)

Heartbreaking.

Malaysia started off with a strong footing but was let down by poor finishing. Not really surprising if you're an avid Malaysian sporting fan as Malaysians have the tendency to let a lead slip and let slip that elusive gold at the penultimate moment. Malaysia had a seemingly unassailable 5-2 lead at one point but suffered a meltdown at the ending stages.

Malaysia didn't play like champions, and deserved the silver medal. Even if we lose a lead, as long as we play well in the penalties, it should be alright. But Malaysia was simply sh*t in the penalties. (with exception of the goalkeeper who had done his part.) Malaysia just didn't have the fighting spirit the Japanese hockey players possess. A worthy champion should be able to forget about the score, concentrate on the game and not let pressure get the better of them.

In short, Malaysia was technically superior but mentally inferior compared to their Japanese opponents. Overall performance is all about mental strength and execution. To their credit, Malaysia did well to reach the final, (surviving a tough group and beating the defending champions India) but that elusive first Asian Games Men's Hockey gold still remains a distant dream.

If there is one key takeaway from today's game, it is this. True champions never let emotions get in their way. They have a way with their emotions.
