Part 8: Reuben + Relics

in #teamaustralia7 years ago

New York, New York. Home of art and great food (and many other great things such as music, history, museums, culture and theatre!). I will just be outlining a few museums I’d visited and places I dined in that I would recommend anyone passing through. I only spent 5 days in New York and only really scratched the surface, there is a wealth of things to do here.

The very first thing I did when I arrived in New York city was head straight to Katz’s Delicatessen as soon it opened at 10am to grab a legendary reuben sandwich. I had read somewhere that the line at lunchtime gets crazy and out the door. Skip brekky and you’ll enjoy a really nice brunch sandwich.

Inside this bad boy you’ll receive a generous amount of corned beef, swiss cheese, sauerkraut, Russian dressing (basically a tomato mayo) served on rye bread. Easily the best sandwich of my life, the price to pay to experience tastebud luxury ($23usd) is irrelevant to the value you will receive out of this sandwich. Every bite I had to stop and appreciate how good this was!

You won’t regret it!

Ok tip number 1. Buy an unlimited metro subway train card. They come in 7 day ($32) and 30 day ($121) options. As walking and subway will be your main point of transportation, this is a no brainer and very good value. The trains are safe, quick and entertaining (often you will see talented musicians grooving down to some sexy saxophone beats).

Now if you’re a museum junkie like I am, New York has 83 museums to pick from. Here are 2 in this blog that I recommend you should visit (more in the my next blog!).

Museum of Natural History has a fantastic assortment of fossils, dinosaur bones and relics from ancient cultures curated in a fascinated display. As the price is what you wish to pay (I gave $1 as I’ve heard how loaded these places are) you will get your money’s worth in eye candy.

The big fella!

Stumble through central park and get lost in serenity of a little piece of nature in a concrete jungle. You will find musicians (again, yes there are so many musicians around!), artists and street performers in the mainly populated areas.

Next up is the MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art). Again pay what you feel, I paid $1. (as an Aussie having to pay tips for every kind of service, I felt no guilt doing this. Universe we are even!).

Ok disclaimer the MET is freaking MASSIVE! I spent 7 hours over 2 days looking over everything. You could be there for an eternity really, just go at your own pace.

Downstairs you’ll find everything from the ancient and medieval civilizations. Egyptian, Greek, Roman and medieval Asia and Europe are what’s on offer.

Upstairs is where I spent of my time. Home to hundreds of classical paintings from the master painters from the Renaissance period. Some of these paintings will leave you stunned at the amount of detail are in them.

Here are some of my favourites!

So after an endless day of walking you are probably going to be famished. With a wealth of (or paradox) to choose from here is another big slurge food item that was another ‘best of anything else tier’.

Lomardi’s Pizzeria in Lower Manhattan is the first pizzeria in New York city and they make a mean pizza. While the price point had me second guessing was I buying a small share of Amazon stock (the pizza was $45), the taste blew all sense of cost out the window.

I ordered the half white pizza (mozzarella, ricotta, romano cheese, oregano, basil, black pepper, garlic infused oil) and half original (resh mozzarella, a san marzano tomato sauce and topped with romano and fresh basil). OMNOMNOMNOM easily the best pizza of my life. Surely bread is something easy for everyone to get right, but clearly not as this dough on this pizza was out of this world delicious!

Hey mate, give me a yell if you get over to the best coast. Portland is super sweet and pretty much has the best food and (now) best coffee north of Melbs.
