How do you beat writers block?
Today I'm stumped, I have so many things I want to write about but I'm really just hitting a brick wall. I want to do a post on how I look for coins to invest in, I want to do a Drongo's Guide on Coeliac Disease, and I'm planning on hopefully doing a tell all interview with a local Camgirl/stripper that I came across.
But today I'm just drawing a blank. So instead of deep and meaningful messages of inspiration today I'm asking for your help.
How do you get past the block and write a decent article when you've got no where to start? Do you have a fall back topic that you can always write about, or do you just skip the day and try again tomorrow?
Also, if there are any topics you'd like to hear my opinion about, let me know and I'll see if I can write about it.
Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.
Take walks. Play. Loosen up. Don't chase the ideas and they will arrive. You gotta dance with them. They can be shy little rascals. Seduce them with your patience. When you least expect it, they show up and remind us of their power.
Thanks Ben!! Great to see you on here, I'd love to get you signed up as an offical member of Team Australia, the first Bona Fide celebrity of the group would be awesome.
Jump onto Discord https://discord.gg/PWTpuE and have a chat, we'd all be super keen to welcome you into the group.
Will do. Honestly, I find Dischord super confusing! Maybe its just a learning curve. Ill try and figure it out. Thanks mate.
Whats your 4 digit code? I think I need that to find you. Sorry!
Hi @gobha.handcrafts - I am liking each one of your posts within about half an hour of your posting.
If you like my posts within a few hours I will keep on liking yours. Is this a deal? Please let me know as I really like your material and it would be great if we could work together.
Thanks.
Rob.
Hi Rob.
I do try to get through and vote your posts. But as a bit of friendly advice, its really frowned upon to ask "Like 4 Like" etc.
There are some people who will actively fight against and possibly even downvote you for that.
The best thing you can do is join the Team Australia discord chatroom. We jokingly themed it around the Government, so I'm the Prime Minister, you need to check out our Minister of Immigration @choogirl. If you contact her, send her your intro post and some fun facts, then she can get you introduced to the rest of the team. This also gets you regular dole payments by @centerlink, it votes for all of the Teams posts.
I hope this helps mate. A lot of us here want to bring Crypto into the mainstream in Australia, having people with influence will be very helpful.
Well said. @benleemusic
@gohba.handcrafts I think it pays to take the pressure off of yourself. Step away and direct your energy into something completely unrelated yet still stimulating to allow your mind and thoughts to move around in a difference direction. Once you have some new energy circling through you'll find it easier to come back to your projects because you've taken off some of the pressure on the mental block.
If you know what subject you want to write about, sometimes just sitting down and writing the conclusion & then walking away can help.
Your subconscious mind will be on the job while you're doing something else and when you come back you might have the inspiration to fill in the gaps and complete the article.
It works for me sometimes.
I go out and have some experiences of some sort. Go on a walk, ride into the mountains, go to the beach and just let the best idea come to you while your out doing some living.
You apparently have ideas, so is your problem just not knowing how/where to start? Try scribbling down notes on each topic that you want to write about (go oldschool with pencil and paper, or pen if you prefer the sound of pen, I like the sound of pencil XD), perhaps something for one of those topics that you want to write about will start forming itself into an article then.
It might even spark something tagentially related that you suddenly have a mad flash of inspiration for.
And if it doesn't at least you'll have more to work with than you did before ;D
Oops. Replied in the wrong spot. That's how fried I am. Sorry @ryivhnn
No worries :) Fried isn't good, take a flew of days off! :O
Thanks. I wish it was that simple. No rest for the wicked! :)
Just start writing what comes to mind. You can neaten it up after, or throw it away and start again, but it may just help you to clear your mind amd find some order.
200 words.
Just write 200 words.
Good words, bad words. Coherent or incoherent.
Start with those 200 words and see where it takes you.
I posted an exercise to help with writer's block on my blog--the exercise itself is called Perl's Guidelines for Composing. It helps you to focus in on a topic through a structured 'free write.' It's an ordered set of questions that begins broadly and becomes more narrow as you go.
I've used it a lot for creative writing, but also for some technical projects and stuff... you may find it useful!
Good luck--sometimes just putting the pen to the page and giving yourself 15 minutes to see what you come up with can kick-start an idea.
Thanks Jess, I'll give it a look and try it out :)
Lots of good tips in these comments so far.
Like @ryivhnn suggested, I'd recommend starting on paper. Staring at a blank word processor/text editor screen is a good way to get stuck and there are so many distractions available on your computer. Make an outline for the article you want to write. What will the different sections be? What is your thesis or conclusion? What research do you still need to do? After answering these questions, type the outline into your document and start filling in the spaces.
Getting out for a walk or other sort of adventure can be really helpful too, as suggested by @benleemusic and @drpuffnstuff. For best results, carry a small notebook so you can capture anything that comes up while you're out. I also find myself writing in my head while walking sometimes, and all I need to do is type that when I get back to get the flow going.
Thanks mate, certainly good suggestions indeed.
The way I beat it is drinking something with caffeine in it, speeds up the central nervous system just like meth or amphetamine, but weaker.
I hear you. I have at least 30 titles to write and I'm looking through them today they either need lots of research or lots of thought and I am struggling. I've already been for a walk and had a ton of caffeine....next I might have a siesta and see if that freshens me up.
