Companies Politicising their Brand

With just under 2 months left until this farce of a same sex marriage plebiscite is over, I for one can't wait for it to be finished.

Today, my major beef is with companies and the media saying they support the Yes or No Vote. Again, I don't care which way you want to vote, its your democratic right to vote the way you see fit and not feel ashamed of it.

But we have these companies saying "QANTAS supports same sex marriage" or the ARL, ARU, Virgin Australia plus a million more.

The problem is, that is not the view of the entire company, thats the view of a couple of people on the board that are looking to score social points.

The Australian Rugby Union say they support Same Sex Marriage, but then Israel Fallau tweeted last Thursday “I love and respect all people for who they are and their opinions. but personally, I will not support gay marriage.”
Israel is a devout Catholic, while he may not agree with the Yes campaign, he tells then that he respects them and their opinions.

So how can the ARU speak for everyone in its organisation? How can QANTAS say that the organisation, which is made up of tens of thousands of unique individuals, support one way or another?

This is blatantly social point scoring, and sadly some people would be dumb enough to fall for it. People wont fly Tiger airways because it didn't come up in support, where as QANTAS did.

Shame on big business for using such a sensitive issue to try and sway consumers and the public.

Other instances of business abuse of the issue include Margaret Court having her name stripped from a tennis stadium because of her opinions. Last I checked she received the accolade because of her tennis achievements, not because of her personal opinions.

But now we have the teenager in Canberra who was sacked because she dared to speak up saying that it was ok to vote No. Where is the public outcry!! Where is the rage of the media!!!
If that girl was sacked for saying she was voting Yes, the media, fakebook, even old Teary Eyed George Brandis would be screaming at the top of their lungs about bigotry.
Sorry poor teenage girl, your opinion isn't as valid because its not what the left media want to hear.

Shame on Australia ad Shame on the media for turning this whole debacle into a complete farce and splitting the nation. All i ask for is equal coverage of both camps. While of course I say people have every right to vot anyway they like, I include voting No in that, because it is OK to Vote No if that's what you believe. The NO voters are no less of a human and have the exact same rights to democracy as the Yes voters.

Bring on Nov 15 so all the rubbish can be over.

Sort:

it's ridiculous. Next we'll be told companies have feelings and are also "gender fluid" the Mainstream media is moronic. I grimace everyday and force myself to check news.com.au just to see how bad it could be, and it's always worse.

This is why we can't have nice things.

Democracy only works if you respect others right to voice a different opinion to your own.

@buggedout I know - It's up there with my pet beef! (no not my favourite cow)

freedom of speech... people seem to think their right to free speech negates the need to be respectful of others, particularly if others opinion differ.

People forget that just because they have the right to say something ... doesn't always mean they should - particularity if they lack respect and understanding of the consequences of what they say and more especially how they say it.

Gohba exercised his right to free speech and voice his opinion - but in a way that was respectful of and unoffensive to others including those who's opinion differs- which is actually the way it should be!

See what this whole crazy thing has done - I'm holding @gohba.handcrafts up as the finest example of human conduct. Geez our govt does have a lot to answer for! (love you Gohbs lol)

If I'm the finest example of human conduct, we're all screwed. Thanks Shelly :)

Maverick agrees with u 100%

Agreed! Businesses as a whole should be promoting mutual respect and encouraging everyone to have their honest opinion no matter what it is, rather than what may be seen as the PC thing to do at the time, only to win favour and make more $. Even the AFL has jumped on the bandwagon with their "YES" balls and branding at HQ.

Great post and I wish steemit had a sticky or pin option because this is one of those special posts. ??

Might end up being an own-goal supporting gay marriage if this Today Tonight poll is anything to go by; https://www.todaytonightadelaide.com.au/polls/62
I don't put much stock in these because they're fairly easily manipulated, but 'Yes' has less than 20%.
