Over the weekend the Explore Adelaide team visited the Torrens Linear Park in Highbury. Situated only 14km from Adelaide CDB, and 9km from the popular Morialta Conservation Park, this natural gem is only a short drive away. Whether you’re interested in walking, cycling, or just looking for a great spot to take the family, this walking trail has something for you.

There are many aspects of the Torrens Linear Park that make it such a great destination, but our focus today will mainly be on the section around Highbury. Here are some of our favourite parts.

Nice and Close

If you’re looking for a place for the kids to play that’s not too far from the city then look no further. The greenery of the area reminds you of a country setting minus a long drive. Torrens Linear Park is also a short drive to Morialta Conservation Park, giving you the opportunity to combine two amazing places into one day trip.

If you need to pick up any picnic supplies on the way, you can also stop at one of the many nearby shops.

All About the Walk

Lined with River Red Gums, The Torrens Linear Park stretches for 30km along the Torrens River with a walking track that follows most of the way.

This well maintained track is designed to allow a nice flow of traffic for both cyclists and pedestrians, no matter the distance you want to travel.

Along the way you’ll be met with amazing views of the Adelaide foothills, picturesque scenery, and a snapshot of local wildlife.

Whether you’re interested in a casual stroll or a challenging run, the views of the Adelaide Hills make it all the better. Just be on the lookout for snakes during warmer weather.

Something for the Kids

There are plenty of things that children will love in the Linear Park. If you follow one track you’ll make your way to a playground.

The natural setting is a great place for kids to climb, run and play among the trees and river. There are dazzling Mulberry trees along the walking trail that is perfect for climbing and provides shade to play under. It’s also a great place for a game of Hide and Seek, something we tried out ourselves.

Kids will love being able to engage in nature play while taking in the beauty of their surroundings. Torrens Linear Park is also a great spot to bring your dog.

How about lunch?

When you’re looking for a spot to spend the day one thing you need to factor in is lunch. The Torrens Linear Park is full of lush green grass that is perfect for your next picnic. We had our last picnic at the base of the Mulberry trees. This provided us with shade, a fun place to play and some perfect hide and seek spots.

There are plenty of park benches throughout the park, making it easy to stop and admire the natural beauty.

So if you’re looking for a beautiful park to bring the family that’s close to the city, look no further than Torrens Linear Park. Particularly near Highbury, the beauty and serenity of this place is an amazing experience and worth the trip.

Another of my regular locations when I was studying in the city. I lived not far away so it was nice and accessible for me. The paths were always pretty well maintained.
