Sellicks Beach – The Place to Be
South Australia has some truly amazing beaches, whether it’s the popular Glenelg beach, or further south along the Fleurieu Peninsula, but here at Explore Adelaide, we have a few of our own favourites. In particular, Sellicks Beach has a special place in our heart, and has been the source of much summer time fun. Only 50 minutes drive south of the city, Sellicks Beach’s sandy shores, and crystal clear waters sit waiting to be explored and traversed.
Over the course of this post, we’ll tell you exactly why Sellicks Beach is one of our favourites, though words barely begin to describe how beautiful this beach really is, we’ll certainly do our best to write it out for you.
Bring Everything
One thing that makes Sellicks Beach that little bit better than some other beaches, is the fact that you can take your car on it. Rather than walking along hauling heavy beach shelters, bags of snacks and a family’s worth of beach towels, you instead get to drive along the beach, pick a nice spot, then set up next to your car without the extra hassle. For some people this also means being able to drive down with their boats, jet skis or heavy fishing gear.
Whatever you’re there for, the use of a car on the beach is certainly helpful. If driving on the beach isn’t your thing, there is also ample parking both at the top and the bottom of the beach entrance ramp, as well as out the front of The Sellicks Beach General Store.
Fun for the Whole Family
While some of these points apply to beaches in general, there is still a need to mention them in regards to Sellicks Beach. There is so much done at the beach, suitable for a the entire family.
Kids may find fun in building an endless number of sand castles or by looking out for marine life in the cool blue water. Adults may find a relaxing time just lying on the sand with a drink in hand and taking in the natural beauty of it all.
Both adults and children will enjoy a cooling swim on a hot summer’s day or a casual walk up along the beach.
Beauty and the Beach
As far as beaches go in Adelaide, Sellicks really is a special find. The locals treasure it, photographers love to take photos of it, and families drive hours to get to it. Try sitting in your car in the top car park at sunset, you’ll be itching to get a camera out or to take a quiet walk through the sand.
The pride and care that the locals take in this beach is astounding, and it’s no wonder that it’s the number one place for everyone in the area to go to on a hot day, or on a public holiday. Cars line Sellicks Beach early on Australia Day, securing their spots to have a day to unwind and luxuriate alongside the calming waves, and watching their kids play for hours.
Why not organise a family day out on a warm weekend for your next birthday event, go for a swim, play some beach cricket, and enjoy some hot chips from The Sellicks Beach General Store.
The General Store
Only a short walk from the water’s edge is The Sellicks Beach General Store, where you can go to satisfy your beach-day shopping needs.
They have a large range of takeaway foods, drinks, general grocery items, a huge stock of ice creams, beach toys, and even bathers all to satisfy the needs of the locals and the beach goers alike.
Keep up with a long-held Aussie tradition of hot chips at the beach followed by an ice cream, or simply pick up some much-needed groceries before you make your way home. The Sellicks Beach General Store has long opening hours to help cater everyone’s needs, whether it’s for a drink before you workout on your early morning beach run, or for dinner after a long day relaxing at the beach.
So if you’re like us and thoroughly enjoy a good beach-day with friends, hopefully you’ll consider Sellicks Beach for your next trip.
The natural beauty, the fun and the general atmosphere definitely make it a worthwhile day out for you and whoever else you decide to bring along, you can even bring the dog, he’ll love it!
Here at Explore Adelaide, we love our beaches. We have many beaches on our list to visit and write about, but if you like Sellicks as much as we do, or if you have another beach you want us to know about, send us a message or a comment and let us know about it.

Sellicks is lovely. I think Maslins is more picturesque, although the local 'fauna' not so much.
That whole coastline down to Cape Jervois is brilliant, particularly for spearing.
Maslin is great, you need to do it properly at-least once ;)
Nice place and picture thanks for sharing
Thanks, it's out favourite beach, easy to get to, great views and awesome community vibe when it's busy.
If you're ever in South Australia, I'd definitely add it to the list!
@esploreadelaide I lived two years in Australia through Working holiday Visa. Unfortunately I did not have chance to visit Southern Australia it is a great reason to come back one day hopefully soon!
