Egret and mystery friend

This egret was happily sitting on the rail of a jetty at Mandurah WA and allowed me to get quite close

Eventually he spread his wings and showed off magnificent white flight feathers

The other bird sitting on the rail looks really interesting; does anyone know what it is?
