Pimp My Pie: Steak and Onion Pie

Hello Team Australia and welcome to the first Pimp My Pie.

In this series we'll be teaching you how to cook a killer, bakery-style pie from the comfort of your own kitchen. We'll be starting with a popular Aussie classic: the legendary Steak & Onion pie.

Note we put cheese in all our pies, but feel free to leave that out if you can't hold your milk.

Ingredients:

  • 4 Sargent's Traditional Meat Pies
  • 1/2 Spanish Onion - chopped
  • 100g of your favourite Aussie cheese - grated

Method:

  1. Pre-heat oven to 170 degrees C. (160 fan forced)
  2. Give your pies a quick rinse under the tap (This stops them from drying out too much and makes for a softer, bakery-style pie.)
  3. Place your pies on to a baking tray and into the oven for 30 - 35m
  4. Chop your onion and grate your favourite cheese (We love Mainland Vintage - technically a Kiwi cheese, but wouldn't be the first thing we've claimed from our colonial cousins eg. Russel Crowe)
  5. Remove your pies from the oven and allow to cool for a minute or two
  6. Use a serrated knife to take the lids off your pies and mix cheese and onion through the steak and gravy
  7. Replace the lids on your pies and enjoy with your favourite sauce!

These pies are delicious by themselves for a winter snack, or serve with a side of salad and mashed potato for a tasty Aussie dinner.

Not a fan of onion? Simply replace the onion in this recipe with some chopped mushroom for a mouth watering Steak and Mushroom pie.

I'm sorry but the classic is the straight meat pie with sauce on top.

Very true, that's THE classic, this is just a classic, mildly adventurous pie. Will work our way up to the Ned Kelly and Pie with 'the lot'. These are very serious pies and we need to ensure everyone's got the hang of Frozen Pie Mod 101 before taking it that far.
