The history of Tea is long and complex, spreading across multiple cultures over the span of thousands of years. Tea likely originated in southwest China during the Shang dynasty as a medicinal drink.
An early credible record of tea drinking dates to the 3rd century AD, in a medical text written by Hua Tuo

Tea originated in China as a medicinal drink. It came to the West via Portuguese priests and merchants, introduced to it there during the 16th century. Drinking tea became fashionable among Britons during the 17th century, who introduced the plant to their possessions in India to bypass a Chinese monopoly

From its earliest recorded use, tea was widely believed to refresh the spirit, alleviate tiredness, fight off depression and illness, and boost energy. We still enjoy Tea today and in fact it is the world’s number one beverage after water. Tea is a drink that penetrates all cultures and continents

As well as the great debate in the eighteenth century about the taxation of tea, there was an equally furious argument about whether tea drinking was good or bad for the health. Leaps forward in medical and scientific research mean that we now know that drinking four cups of tea a day may help maintain your health, but such information was not available to tea drinkers 250 years ago. The debate rumbled on into the nineteenth century, but was really put to an end in the middle of that century, when a new generation of wealthy philanthropists realised the value of tea drinking to the temperance movement. In their enthusiasm to have the working classes go teetotal, tea was regularly offered at temperance meetings as a substitute for alcohol

Until this point in its history all tea was green; the natural pigmentation within the leaves preserved by the careful steaming process that still takes place today. It was the European export market that first saw rise to the innovative introduction of new processes that resulted in Black Tea. Allowing the leaves to oxidise naturally before drying resulted in the dark colour and produced a tea which stood up better to foreign export. Whilst the Chinese continued to drink green tea, it was black tea that really took Europe by storm

A Scientific Study on Tea Buzz

There are 4 substances in tea that are able to cross the blood-brain barrier to provide a stimulant effect. We have good, old caffeine, which you can also get from coffee and soft drinks. Then we have two substances related to caffeine, theobromine and theophylline. And finally we have a rather unique amino acid called L-Theanine, which has some very interesting effects on the brain

The main difference between the caffeine in coffee and tea, is that tea has a lot less of it. Whereas a strong cup of coffee can provide 100 mg, 200 or even 300 mg of caffeine, a cup of tea may provide 20-60 mg

  • Caffeine
  • Theobromine
  • Theophylline
  • L-Theanine ( Amino Acid )

Caffeine

Caffeine causes stimulation of the central nervous system, increases vigilance and reduces drowsiness

Caffeine has several proposed mechanisms, the main one is that it is believed to block an inhibitory neurotransmitter called adenosine at certain synapses in the brain, leading to a net stimulant effect.
Adenosine is believed to increase in the brain throughout the day, building up a kind of a “sleep pressure.” The more adenosine, the greater the tendency to fall asleep. Caffeine partly reverses this effect

Theophylline and Theobromine

Theophylline and theobromine are both related to caffeine and belong to a class of organic compounds called xanthines. They both have several physiological effects on the body such as relaxing smooth muscles in the airway, making breathing easier while also stimulating both the rate and force of contraction of the heart

Theobromine

Theobromine can also stimulate the heart, but it does have a mild diuretic effect and improves blood flow around the body, leading to a net reduction in blood pressure.

L-Theanine

Consider it an amino acid, L-theanine is a substance that may modulate aspects of brain function in humans. Evidence from human electroencephalograph (EEG) studies show that it has a direct effect on the brain. L-theanine significantly increases activity in the alpha frequency band which indicates that it relaxes the mind without inducing drowsiness. However, this effect has only been established at higher doses than that typically found (approximately 20mg) in a cup of black tea ( Popular In Turkey )

Why Tea is more than just TEA

Back when Europe was stone huts and the Mayans were playing soccer, the Chinese were drinking tea. Tea goes back at least 5,000 years as medicine and more than 1,000 years as a simple beverage. Made from the leaves of a bush related to flowering camellia, tea has had a starring role in major features such as the American Revolution and Zen Buddhism. The Japanese regard tea so highly that they’ve created a ceremony for it, and a separate little tea house in which to serve it.

The tea ceremony is remarkable in that it dramatizes tea’s physical effects on the human body. Tea causes changes in body chemistry that rejuvenate, relax, enhance the ability to think, and change mood.1-6 The biochemical changes provoked by tea are scientifically supported, and they’re not due to caffeine.

Since the 18th century the United Kingdom has been one of the world's greatest tea consumers, with an average per capita tea supply of 1.9 kg (4.18 lbs) per year.
