Wisdom is expansive: I will make my teachings shine forth like the dawn; I will spread their brightness afar off. Ben Sira 24:32
The wisdom is a creation of God, the Book of Ben Sira tells us, and wisdom exists with the Lord from eternity: "Before all other things wisdom was created; and prudent understanding, from eternity" Ben Sira 1:4. For this reason, the wisdom teacher Ben Sira set out to teach this mysterious science in his book.
And like every wise man, this master explained to us that wisdom is immaterial, subtle, beautiful, perfect, progressive, expansive, it builds everything and orders the universe in the best manner. And all this has a deep practical sense for all men, because God gave man the freedom to choose: "God in the beginning created human beings and made them subject to their own free choice" Ben Sira 15:14.
Whoever lives wisely lives in harmony with the creation of the universe, that is, lives sensibly, and thus reaps good fruits, in some texts of the Bible these fruits are the fruits of the tree of immortality. The wisdom as science, is the knowledge of the correct means to live. On the other hand, whoever lives with his back to wisdom and his teachings is a fool, and thus reaps the fruits of death. Wisdom calls us to choose and shows us two paths.
And faced with these two paths, the wise in their wisdom propose something to us. Blessing, educating, inspiring, motivating, and showing the most excellent and the best is the typical task of the wise. For this reason, and expressing with a beautiful metaphor the progressiveness and expansiveness of wisdom, the teacher of wisdom expressed the reasons that led him to write the book:
"Now I, like a stream from a river,
and like water channeling into a garden—
I said, ´I will water my plants,
I will drench my flower beds.´
Then suddenly this stream of mine became a river,
and this river of mine became a sea.
Again I will make my teachings shine forth like the dawn;
I will spread their brightness afar off.
Again I will pour out instruction like prophecy
and bestow it on generations yet to come" Ben Sira 24:30-33.
