Although this tax blog tends to focus on federal income taxes, a variety of other types of tax exist at the state and local level. Unemployment tax is a type of payroll tax that exists on federal and state levels. The federal unemployment tax rate is 6% (which can be offset by state unemployment taxes). Note that unemployment taxes are only paid by the employer. The employee will not see these taxes on their pay stub.
