That's the best way forward, build your portfolio so that it is really strong, there's a lot of people trying to get into tattooing and you want to be the best option for a studio. You'll learn from it by continually drawing and when you do get an apprenticeship the drawing and art side of it will already be strong and you can focus on the technical side of tattooing.
