ORIGINS of TATTOO
The story of tattoos stretches back up to 8000 years.
A mummy from the Chinchorro culture in pre-Incan Peru has been found to have a mustache tattooed on his upper lip. Chinchorro is a culture that existed from about 7000-1500 BC generally formed by fishermen inhabiting the Pacific coastal region of northern Chile and southern Peru.

Otzi, mummified iceman of the alps has patterned charcoal tats along his spine behind his knee and around his ankles. Otzi had had a total of 61 tats forming 19 groups of black lines ranging from 1 to 3 mm in thickness and 7 to 40 mm long. A microscopic examination of samples collected from these tattoos revealed that they were created from fireplace ash or soot.

The mummy of Amunet, a priestess in Middle Kingod Egypt features tattoos that probably symbolize sexuality and fertility. This mummy is a proof of ancient Egyptian tattooing practices.

Tattoos don’t have one historical origin point that we know of, they seem that they’ve been developing independently around the world. The word “tattoo” comes from an anglophone modification of the word “tatao”, a Polynesian word used in Tahiti, where English captain James Cook landed in 1796 and encountered a heavily tattooed man and women. Previous words used to express this term were scarring, painting or staining.
