The Great Taste of Huean Kalasin
Huean Kalasin is one of the first restaurants in Thailand where I got to try a large variety of Eastern (Esarn) Thai food. Foods that include Thai dishes like Som Tham, deep fried beef strips, different types of larb, and many types of namthok dishes.
Kalasin is the province the owner is from so the restaurant has a wooden almost cowboy type theme. Kalasin itself has a farming cowboy community feel to it. There are eight tables in total, which are normally reserved for both lunch and dinner.
One of the restaurant owners is renown for his som tham and Thai salad making skills. Som tham is a staple food in Thailand and this man’s hands on the subject are legendary. This trip we ordered the som tham Korat which is one of his specialties.
I was super looking forward to the fried beef because it’s been one of my favorite dishes there for years.
They serve it with a couple spicy dipping sauces which wakes me right up at the first bite.
As far as larb dishes are concerned, their catfish larb was made to perfection. Huean Kalasin has the perfect moisture in their catfish larb which blends well with their fresh vegetables and herbs.
The fried nam pork ribs are sliced thin then fried in garlic. It’s also served with fresh garlic, fresh ginger and fresh chilies.
Our soup type dish was spicy boiled pork ribs or in Thai “tom sap.”
The menu only has Earn food.
There’s a large variety of Esarn food if you don’t eat certain meat and even has vegetarian dishes. I always enjoy my visits and look forward to coming back for many more years as a regular Esarn food fan.
