Cannon Restaurant - A Tasteem Review
It was one cloudy day that we found ourselves in the most northerly town in England, that is Berwick-Upon-Tweed.
The last time I was in this town I was 14 years old, and scampered up the road to see the ‘Welcome to Scotland’ sign, and on crossing it made my claim that I had stepped on the grounds of the once fierce barbarians.
Today, you need to drive miles up the same northerly road and there’s no sign so what happened to it?
All I could see what that blasted A1 motorway; how things have changed. Maybe the English took some of that land back and reclaimed it?
I digress and this post is about food and a certain Cannon restaurant that looks like it should be cheap, but was it?
Berwick-Upon-Tweed is a coastal town so you shouldn’t go wrong with Fish and Chips, and despite the ‘other things’ on the menu board this establishment is primarily a ‘chippy’
The Cannon restaurant does have a seating area in the style of those ‘American Booths’, which I do like. They do make for good private conversations, and I loathe places that create seating too close to each other.
On walking between the lime green seating that has seen better days, we took ours close to the end of the row.
I sat down and could not get comfortable, as my legs were banging against the table. For the sakes of a few more inches, one lot of seats could have been removed.
I’m not the tallest person in England, but the 6 feet plus guys would not have a pleasant time here.
Fish and Chips was a given for me, but @bingbabe decided to order a Bolognaise pizza? Well, we all have our differences of opinion I suppose.
After paying just under £20 which included two cups of tea, the food was delivered quite promptly to our table.
Was it the time of day I wonder, but from that moment the other diners all piled out and we were left alone eating our food.
Now I have eaten Fish and Chips from literally hundreds of fish restaurants and the first visual does count.
With this one I was undecided, the chips could have looked nicer, the fish possibly a little crisper, but there was only one way to find out.
My first few bites were quite positive, the fish being reasonably fresh but I would have expected better being right next to the North Sea.
The chips fared worse and I failed to finish them. Unlike the Yorkshire variety, they had not been cooked in lard, which consequently shortens your life due to artery-clogging but that taste…. Oooohh.
I had a taste of @bingbabe’s pizza and found it quite decent. She did not think the same and left half of it; a smidge critical I would say.
We could have chosen one of many Fish restaurant on the Berwick main street and feel we didn’t choose the worst of the bunch by any means.
A visit at noon may be preferable than a 1.30 pm visit when the place is about to close.
The proprietor was friendly, though I had to explain the photographs were simply for ‘memories’.
He may not like my review of his chippy, though I would say it is fair. Not a bad place, not too expensive but give it a miss if you are taller than 5’5.

The pizza looks better than chips :)

Love the Diner style layout, just not sure about the color choice though.... somewhat reminds me of a few things I would rather not mention :D
LOL.., it's not the best is it?
yeah... going to go with nope! hehe :D
Looks nice to eat there indeed I do like the entrance of that restaurant, they have a big showcase @slobberchops
Fish and chips is really a delight indeed :D
I have had much better, if I lived close by I might give them a second chance.
Yeah, see, I was going to point that out about the booths. The problem is they try to fit so many into such a small place so either you don't have room to stretch your legs or in my case your gut is squished against the edge of the table the whole time. Those chips really do look pretty sad. It almost looks like they do when they are a couple of hours old and cold. The fish looks decent and that pizza looks pretty good to me as well.
They are generally good here, I can't remember being so squashed up before.
The food was not fresh, I don't mean days old.. but it was not out of the fryer. It makes a huge difference.
Yeah, that is a bit of a deal breaker for me. I don't think I have ever sent anything back. I just unhappily eat it and then never go back :)
Once fierce. Cheek!! Still fierce!!! And it's ours, ours I tell you! Although everyone does sound a little English there :0)
Bloody barbarians, I could see a horde coming down the A1 brandishing tartan!
You wouldn't see the tartan.. it's in our BLOOD!!
:0D

Bolognese pizza sounds interesting! Not something I would select but I may try to make it one day as I imagine the family would dive in face first!
I live about 1/4 mile from the north sea and hardly ever tuck in to a nice fish and chip supper; our local is bloody amazing. Now I have a craving!

Nice restaurant! In the meantime, I agree with you that the seats are not comfortable for the ones who have long legs. The pizza looks yummy. ;)
