Uncle Fu Golden Chicken
Urn chicken is a local speciality in Taiwan that can be found in many rural areas. The chicken is cooked whole in an urn as there were no oven in the old days. Ideally the urn should use real wood to enhance the chicken flavour, but some places use gas stove for convenience. I went to Uncle Fu Golden Chicken recently and they do it the proper way.
Uncle Fu is located on the side of a main road at and have a big car park opposite the restarant. You have to be careful to cross the road as sometimes the car speed quite fast.
It was a very welcoming site outside the restaurant with the line of urns and a stack of logs for the fire. The staff were already busy roasting the chicken already, even though it was still quite early in the evening.
It wasn't even six o'clock when I arrrived as I had just finished a hike with some friends. We started off early in the morning and had a long day. An early dinner was in order. And anyway, they close at 7pm.There were only a few tables of customers when we walked in. They were sat on the other end of the restaurant.
We ordered the famous urn chicken of course, you can't come here and not order it! This is how it is served, I know it doesn't look very appealing , but trust me, it was good!!
You might wonder how we eat it. Traditionally customers shred it themselves, they give you a pair of thick workman gloves and a pair of disposable plastic gloves to go on top and then you do it yourself. Some places do it for you, but shredding your own chicken is all part of the fun. My wife always does that, she loves doing it, and I have to say, she's quite an expert at it!
We ordered a few other dishes. A fresh bambooshoot soup, some veggies and and omelette with preserved radish. These are all simple local rural area dishes, but really tasty. I have had urn chicken in many other places, some are good, some not so good, this is definitiely in the former category.
By the time we finished our meal the restaurant was full with customer as this is a popular place. It was already dark outside and time to go home, it's been a long day.
