A modern Hong Kong style cafe
Hunghom Cafe is a modernised Hong Kong style cafe. These types of cafes are very popular in Hong Kong and are typical quick eats that serve a range of drinks, sandwiches and noodles etc. They are great for a quick meal and most places are always very busy thoughout the whole day. Their menu changes slightly over the day as they have different set meals for breakfast, lunch, tea time and dinner.
The cafe is located on a main road you can see the double decker bus outside, and how close it is to the cafe. I came here for late breakfast around ten o'clock one morning, and even at this time of the day, it was still quite busy.
I like how this cafe is quite spacious and airy and the front of the cafe has a big panel of window and glass door letting all the natural light in. The seating area is like carriage seats on a train, and is quite typical in these type of cafes. These ones are quite large and sit 3 a side.
Most of the Hong Kong style cafe nowadays have modernised themselves placing more emphaises on the decor. Often, it doesn't need to be complicated, and I quite like what they have done here by installing mugs on the wall. This is not only simple and pracitical as it doubles up as a lamp shade, and also very fitting for the establishment.
The kitchen area is at the back of the cafe. I coudn't really take a proper photo of it as the locals get quite funny sometimes when you take their photos. You might notice this photo is point mainly towards the ceiling as I had to avoid the other customers. But you can see the serving window from the kitchen and a couple of the waiters.
Since I was due to meet up with a friend for lunch that day, I didn't have much too eat. I ordered an egg sandwich to share with my wife, and the Hong Kong style tea which is the cup on the top of the photo. Hong Kong style tea is strong brew tea using evaporated milk to enrich the flavour of the tea instead of normal fresh milk. I always order it when I come to these type of cafes.
If you look at the decor inside the cafe, you may wonder if it really qualifies as a cheap and fabalous place. Well, this meal only cost me HKD48 which is slightly over USD6. There is no minimum charge here, so in theory you could hang around for as long as you like, though I'm sure you will get funny looks if you sit here all day and not order anything else.
Hong Kong a busy city and there's always lots to do, so people come and go very frequently. By the time I finished my sandwich and drink, it was nearing lunch time and most people had cleared off. Time to get ready for the next wave of customers for lunchtime.
