The Unicorn is a traditional British style pub run by Alan and Jan, a British Couple , and their daugther Lyndsey. They serve food as well - a simple menu of simple British fare. This is in case people want to have something to eat as they drink. So, no heavy cooking, just something light and simple.
These are amongst my favourite items on the menu.
Lasagne
Gammon chop
Scampi
Yorkshire Pudding
So, why do I recommend The Unicorn, why is it my favourite restaruant? Since they only serve simple food fare, it can't be the food, although the food is perfectly fine - nothing wrong with it. Well, what I really like about The Unicorn is that they are in a nice location with a nice courtyard. It is vey pleasant to sit out in the evenings and have a couple of drinks, and have a meal.
More importantly, the hosts are very friendly, welcoming and humorous people. Always some bits of news to share, always somethign funny to say. A couple of examples of their sense of humour.
Jan was going away for a few days, and I wished her a safe journey and told her to enjoy her holidays. She said, "Oh I will. I will try very hard to enjoy myself."
There was this occasion when a man asked if they served tapas. Alan said no, and was very helpful in pointing him in the right direcition. I remarked to Alan tha he is very helpful. He was, "Oh yes, I am. Especially, if there are children. I will take them there personally." A pause, then he said, "I dont' want the children here."
There is this kind of 'weird' guest they have. He is quite a regualr. He comes in, has his drink, and somethimes, his meal. He will not talk to anyone. One evening, after he left, Alan remarked, "The trouble with that one ishe can't stop telling jokes." It took me a while to understand what he was implying.
I don't know what they say about me, but I imagine only nice things, since I am always on my best and exemplary behaviour.
Their sense of humour is my kind of humour - spontaneous and instant come backs.
The Unicorn has been there for 17 years. They serve also as a information post for British Expatriots. Both Jan and Alan are very helpful in dispensing information, about Benalmadena and anything that the guests may wish to know.
They have a fair bit of returning trade - from British expats visiting, or residing in Benalmadena. Sometimes it seemed all the guests know each other, or are very friendly towards each other. A very friendly place indeed.
Perhaps that is why they are able to survive in the very competitive environment, where eateries come and go, and businesses don't last.
Anyhow, it is very pleasant indeed to have an idle evening, sitting in the courtyard, some call it terrace, and have a couple of pints and something to eat. Sometimes, swifts and seagulls circle overhead, entertaining you while they hunt for food.
It is always a pleasure to return to The Unicorn

Having read your post about The Unicorn last year, I feel like I'm a returning guest. I really liked the anecdotes you provided this time. My favorite is the host "helping" families with children find a nice place to eat...somewhere else. LOL
Hi Jon, Yes, that tickles me too. A Paraprosdokian. He is ever so humorous. Both Jan and Alan are very witty people.
Ha! Great restaurant review! I would definitely want to hang out there, too!
Thank you Melinda. I am sure you will like it. Very easy-going atmosphere. Everybody, very friendly.
Maybe you feel like you're at home where people talk?
Strange, but for children there is already a menu, although Alan doesn't want the children here. I also like this little pub with the beautiful courtyard. Is Jan not a boy's name?
People will always talk. There is nothing we can do about that. It doesn't bother me at all. And trust me, people who talk to you about other people will talk about you to other people too. That is how it is.
I can't remember whether it was Oscar Wilde or Mark Twain who said, "The only thing worse than being talk about, is not being talk about." :-)
Alan will not stop the children from coming, but he will not encourage them either. I think he like it to be peaceful, so that his clients won't be disturbed.
Jan is short for Janet. :-)
Howdy sir Vincent! Another great review, I like that place! I would eat there everyday just for the owners!
Howdy Jonboy. You are catching up on your reading again, are you?. Yes, I like the place. Nice place, and the hosts are very humorous.
I think their personalities are what keeps them in business don't you? You should ask them why they left England or did they already tell you?
I assume to get away from the cold and live a slower pace of life. 😊
howdy today sir Vincent! you haven't asked them yet? Are you trying to be a slacker sir Vincent? I think you need to ask them specifically, the answer might not be anywhere near your assumptions! Go there for dinner, I expect a specific answer by this time tomorrow! lol.
