One of the things I have loved about Japan is the food. And so far, all the ramen places we’ve eaten at have been outstanding!

Engine Ramen in Kyoto is no exception to my experience. It boasts vegan and gluten-free options as well as an English menu. This place caters to tourists!!

Like most ramen places, you order your meal by using a vending-machine which spits out your ticket, which you hand to the staff. And yes, this includes drinks. The machine takes notes, and clearly marked in English also.

The space itself is groovy and modern. Cool jazz music was playing when we came. A nice touch was the cute little Shintō shrine behind the bar.

The ‘one-cup sake’ we ordered was nice, and you have a choice between sweet or dry. They also have beer. Tea is free and available at your table or bench.

The flavours were amazing. I had the standard ramen, in chicken broth. Lovely balanced flavours with no excessive tastes. The black fungi provided a different texture. My partner got the vegan option... she was literally having orgasms as she ate it was that good.

Price-wise was great. Mine cost about ¥800, the vegan options around ¥1200. Sake was ¥600. Very reasonable!!
