L’Ancienne Ecole — 1/2 drunk restaurant review
Restaurant name: L’Ancienne École
Town: Palau del-Vidre (close to Perpignan)
Food type: Catalan
Cost: about 100 USD, (not cheap but very good!)
Ambiance: *****
Food: *****
(Before ordering our meal, we were brought a “gift from the chef” which was a type of fresh goat cheese with lemon, on top of greens. It was small and we ate it so quickly that no photos survived)
after that,
we started by sharing a dish of “poulpe” (octopus) salad on toast with some avocado and artichoke:
It was fresh tasting, well cooked, and beautifully served !
Really beautiful colors!! and very yum, too!
To drink, we ordered a bottle of rosé:
It was dry and delicious — a local wine —(and since my dad was driving, it was mostly my responsibility to drink):
For the third course, I had salmon with vegetables and puff pastry:
This was buttery and perfectly cooked, the vegetables were simple, and perfect for me.
My dad had the fish of the day, it was a “merlan”:
I didn’t try it, but he ate it all and is a very picky guy ;)
It was so good, but we had already eaten too much by the time the dessert menu came around.
Of course, we still could not resist, and ordered a chocolate mouse, with white chocolate cream on top:
(By this point in the meal I had drank most of the wine and hardly remembered to photograph my dessert)
It was so good, I found room to eat it all!
Here are photos of the restaurant and menu:
(It was very cute, in what I assumed was an old school house):
We sat outside in a covered area surrounded by windows and bamboo :)
A big part of this restaurant’s appeal is that they change the menu seasonally, always using fresh local produce.
So here is the “spring menu”:
appetizers (we had the “poulpe”):
The fish(I ordered the salmon):
The meats:
The desserts! (I had a special, so it isn’t listed here):
Then, as we do in France, we finished with “café”:
Bon appétit!!

Ps. Didn’t mean to post twice. I blame the wine.
