The "Yes Chef!" Deli - 1000 Hills Chef School Restaurant

We stumbled on The "Yes Chef!" Deli eatery at 1000 Hills Chef School purely by accident one lazy Sunday when we went looking for what was known as the Porcupine Quill Brewing Company.

We were pleasantly surprised to learn that this little craft brewery is situated in the grounds of the 1000 Hills Chef School who runs a restaurant and deli; interesting that this is the only chef school that offers craft beer brewing in their curriculum in South Africa.
Hours - Friday, Saturday and Sunday 8:30 - 16:00

The deli is housed in what looks like an old farm house - it's usually buzzing but it was a rather quiet day when we went as there was a big sporting event on at a private school nearby.

Needless to say this has become one of our firm favourites, a true gem and my Tasteem weekly choice!

One is graciously welcomed by one of the students and shown to the various dining areas - we generally sit outdoors as the weather is great all year round; this particular outdoor area being our favourite as it offers magnificent views of the Valley of 1000 Hills. I took this photo as we were leaving; most diners having moved indoors by this time as rain was threatening.

Our lovely young waitress Thandi who is a second year student, was most attentive without being intrusive.

Play area to keep restless little ones happy .

Inside the "Yes Chef!"Deli - one can take home preserves, artisan breads, smoked meats and even cheeses, all handmade by the students.

The menu offers some real nice choices, with daily specials.
I love the humour in the kiddies menu!

  • The Sleepy head
  • Are we there yet?
  • I'm hungry!
  • I don't like that!
  • Eat your veggies! Moms always have the last say!

They make an excellent wood fired pizza with the crispiest of thin bases with generous toppings, so that's always my choice.
It is large and I always end up sharing or taking the leftovers home in a take-away container aka a doggie bag.
My friend and I both chose the Bacon & Blue Pizza - Bacon, Blue cheese & Red Onion Jam, absolutely delicious.
Price ZAR 90

Hubby is trying his best to not go overboard with carbs since coming off Keto, so ordered the Grilled Chicken Salad - Crisp Garden Greens, Tomato, Cumumber, Olives, Feta & juicy Chicken strips with a creamy dressing.
Price ZAR 90

My friend's hubby ordered the Orange & Honey braised Pork Belly - Pork belly slow braised in Orange, Red Chilli & Honey with Polenta Green Vegetables and Orange jus.
The verdict - the dish of the day for sure; pork belly was tender and succulent and full of flavour!
Price ZAR 120

Mom ordered a simple Chicken & Mayo Sarmie from the kiddies menu, having a small appetite! Served with crispy hand cut Potato Chips, it more than satisfied her; half her sarmie came home in her doggie bag!
Price ZAR 48

It would have been sacrilege not to try their craft beers so we respectively chose the Fes, The Dean and the Graduate, ranging from ABV 4.5 to ABV 9.
I will be writing about the brewery in detail in another post.
Price - ZAR 30 each

We were of course tempted with the cake of the day - Red Velvet Cake and Strawberry Cheesecake.
Price ZAR 45 each

The perfect end to a lovely meal in laidback surroundings.

Bill for five diners came to ZAR840 with tip - very affordable.

Food, ambience and service all top of the class plus the enthusiasm of the foodie students is absolutely infectious!
