In a Hurry, Grab a Curry at The Curry O’s

Quarter Mutton Bunny Chow

Why the O’s? Usually spelt Ous or more correctly Ouens as per my mother tongue Afrikaans, means Guys.
These guys...and gals...REALLY know how to put together an excellent Curry and serve it in a hurry; from vegetarian to the more meaty variety.

Take aways and restaurants from all over our country have been fighting for the coveted Coca-Cola Bunny Chow Barometer Trophy for the past fourteen years.
The Curry O's are National finalists again and came second last year which is quite a feat; they also achieved the highest 2018 sales in the six months prior to the competition.

Ranjini Naidoo used to run a tuck shop from home for ten years to make ends meet and later on bought a food trailer selling food at a local market for about a year.
Opening up The Curry O's in Main Road, Moseley, a suburb of Durban, was a smart move.
We love our spicy curries here in Durbs, as it's fondly known locally, and not having a good Indian take away along the old Main Road makes this a real busy stopover.
People now come from near and far as the Curry Os' reputation has grown - can't keep a good thing quiet for long now can you!

I have yet to stop there and not find a queue; speedy service, deliciously spicy curries made on site with super fresh ingredients ensures that there are always customers either eating at the small dinig area or waiting for orders; never mind the time of day!

One thing you will always find inside any Indian restaurant/ take away is a little wash hand basin as you're supposed to eat with your hands, no cutlery please!

They have a really great menu with choices ranging from Curries...of course...Durban Bunny Chows which I told the #foodfightfriday crew about a while back and I quote from that post:

There are two legends around how the Bunny Chow originated.
One legend is that when migrant Indian sugarcane workers needed a container to carry their lunch to the sugar plantations, someone came up with the brilliant idea of hollowing out a loaf of bread which was ideal to hold their vegetarian curries. The cut-out piece was used to make a 'lid'.
Another legend tells a different story related to our horrid Apartheid history – as only whites could enter restaurants, a plan was devised by the Indian cooks to hide a curry inside the hollowed out bread, and then cover it with the bread lid and serve it through windows or at the back door.

Back to some of the menu items:
Breyani, Roti Rolls, Trotters and Tripe Curry, Mutton & Samp, Chops Chutney, Burgers, Chips, Toasted Sandwiches, Kiddies meals as well as daily specials.
Their prices are very reasonable with my favourite Broad Bean Roti Roll costing ZAR 30 (USD 2.03)

Who can resist stopping at a place where you're greeted with a friendly smile from the Naidoo family; treated as if you're an old friend stopping by, and you have a box full of spicy foods to take home after a hard day at the office!

Friends from inland visited us for the weekend so we introduced them to genuine Indian take away food; Cheryl carrying our loot which looks like nothing; no fancy packaging, but then I've already given you a glimpse of what's inside not so!

Hubby and friend each ordered a Quarter Mutton Bunny Chow served with a sachet of Carrot Salad; they said they'd never finish this in one sitting, but they sure did! The meat was tender and the curry tasty and spicy with a nice bite to it; cleared the sinuses for sure! Cost was ZAR 60 each.

Cheryl, our housekeeper and I shared an absolutely delicious large Chicken & Prawn Breyani with giant plump, super fresh Prawns and succulent Chicken pieces; it came with a yellow Dholl as well as a sachet of Carrot Salad, all costing ZAR 95. It was more than ample for us three ladies.

We ordered my favourite Broad Bean Roti Roll (a double portion costing ZAR 50) for two temp staff, which also came with two small sachets of Carrot Salad; the rotis were melt in the mouth and the beans deliciously spicy with a nice bite to it!

I ordered plain Rotis to have later - 6 plain Rotis cost ZAR 24.
The bill came to a very affordable ZAR 289 (USD 19.55) for 7 people.

The verdict - if you like a curry, in a hurry; this is the place you really need to visit. Delicious food, friendly and speedy service plus excellent value for money!
Kudos to Ranjini Naidoo for realising her dream and to her family for keeping the Curry O's running like a well-oiled machine; all in all my absolute favourite well-spiced take away thanks to a great crew whose motto We cook and serve with love certainly rings true!
