Den Glade Gris - Oslo, Norway

Last week I had the pleasure of spending a 6-hour layover in Oslo, Norway. Instead of waiting in the airport, I decided to take the fast-track to the city center to see what Oslo is all about. It was lunch time and I was feeling hungry after flying in from Riga. I found a restaurant called 'Den Glade Gris' after doing a quick online search. It looked like a highly rated Norwegian BBQ joint. Den Glade Gris translates to "The Happy Pig". I was sold.

I decided to eat outside as you can see by the photo below. It was a beautiful day and I wanted to breath in that fresh Norwegian air before getting on an 8 hour flight back to the states.

One thing that really caught my eye was an appetizer called 'Smoked Whale'. It consisted of tender smoked whale meat from the Norwegian Sea, served with red onion, ruccola and lingonberry sour cream. I've never seen whale meat on a menu at a restaurant in my life, so naturally I had to give it a try.

It tasted a lot more like Beef Jerky than any seafood I have tried, and that's probably because the whales are mammals. According to the internet, it was most likely a Minke Whale. The Lingonberry sour cream was a delicious addition to the whale meat. Overall it was a great appetizer, but a little pricey for the small portion. I cleared the plate, but I don't know if I would ever order it again.

For the main event, I ordered a BBQ pulled pork sandwich topped with extra bacon. Although I am from the United States and we are known for great BBQ food, this was the best pulled pork sandwich I've had in my life. It was served inside of a toasted baguette with a side of coleslaw, fries and house-made ketchup. The bacon was crispy, tasty and abundant. The pulled pork itself was full of flavor and the toasted bread was a perfect vehicle. I devoured this before heading back to the airport for my flight home.

Overall, I highly recommend Den Glade Gris to anyone that loves a good pork dish. Right when you walk in to the restaurant you can see pork knuckles roasting on the open grill. It is one of their most popular dishes. I hope to go back and give it a try some day. The BBQ pulled pork sandwich was incredible and the smoked whale meat was a culinary experience to remember forever.
