If you're looking for a really big sandwich stuffed with corned beef and pastrami, you're going to want to stop by Katz's Deli in Woodbridge, Connecticut. Although it carries the same name as the iconic Katz's Delicatessen in Manhattan, the two Katz's Delis have no affiliation with eachother. The one in Woodbridge might not be as famous, but it sure is delicious! Someday I will need to try the Katz's in Manhattan to compare.
In the photo above you can get a look at the dining area inside Katz's Deli. As you can see, it has a retro-style to it, almost like a classic diner. I stopped by mid-week during lunch time and the place was packed with a line of folks waiting out the door. Thankfully I called my order in ahead of time.
Katz's Deli doubles as a Jewish bakery. The front counter features a display case filled with delicious looking pastries and sweet treats. While I was standing around waiting for my sandwich, I had to order a few chocolate Rugelachs.
Below is a picture of one chocolate Rugelach. These pastries originated in the Jewish communities of Poland but are now very popular around the world, especially in Israel. It was my first time trying one and they were absolutely delicious. It was like a flaky pastry biscuit filled with chocolate layers.
For the main event I ordered the "Hamden" Club Sandwich. The Hamden consisted of a mass of corned beef & pastrami between three slices of rye bread, topped with cole slaw & Russian dressing. This thing was ginormous... and believe it or not, I crushed the whole thing. It was some great tasting meat piled high. You need a big mouth in order to take a bite of this, but I highly recommend it.
