Madre Café a veggie experience in Mexico City

This weekend we went to a brand new place called Madre Café, which translates to English as Mom Cafe. The name doesn’t say anything about the place, as far as I know but we really enjoyed our meal here.

The place is very nice and totally brand new. The building where the restaurant is has hosted many restaurants that soon close but none of them has been backed with a strong investment like this one. They modified the building and made a large kitchen, almost as big as the eating area.

Looking at the menu we noticed they offer a wide variety of simple dishes like salads, sandwiches, poke bowls, pasta and some main courses. Also reading carefully the menu we found many veggie options that sounded very interesting and that will let us participate in this contests.

It’s important to mentions that because part of the concept is offering healthy options, they also offer Kombucha for beverages. The one we ordered was a combination of chamomile, lavender and jasmine. We have heard that this is very healthy so if we acquire superpowers we’ll let you know.

Well I must confess the menu I’m describing was what my wife ordered. My choice was a lot less veggie, so for the sake of this contest I’ll omit it.

Continuing with the menu my wife ordered a salad (in my opinion both dishes were salad) with roasted beets with burrata and Greek yogurt. It looked really pretty and tasted very well. I’m not a fan of yoghurt but the combination was nice and fresh.

Then as a main course she ordered a cauliflower roasted on the coals with a basil pesto. I liked more this one but just because it didn’t have any yoghurt on it. But it was good.

The desert really blew my mind I found it truly original and creative. It was a cheese tart with green tomato marmalade and figs. The top thing in the tart was a crunchy piece of cheese hiding the figs and the tomato marmalade.

My part of the menu was not veggie at all but it was also nice, we’ll tell you in another post.

I do not like most of veggie food but not for the veggies but because most of the time the dishes are trying to be a substitution of a dish with meat instead of exploiting its qualities. Many top restaurants of famous chefs have a lot of veggies in the menu but they not try to hide them on the contrary, they try to turn them into the stars of the plate.

So that’s why I liked this place. Here you ask for veggies and they do not apologize for that. They are honest.
