Tortas de Pavo (turkey sandwich) at La casa del Pavo, Mexico City
A couple of weeks ago we were wandering the streets of Downtown México City and we realized we never got to eat at “La casa del Pavo”, a very traditional and old place which opened in 1901.
“Tortas” are a kind of sandwich very traditional of Mexico City and in this place they serve a very iconic turkey torta.
So it’s kind of an historic place. It is so iconic that it was featured in “Rome” the movie. Over there they filmed the scene where Yalitza ate a turkey torta.
So that’s what we did too!
It is a simple, cheap and good place. They sell turkey prepared anyway you want, even in a Al Pastor Taco. It’s a little unusual to eat a Turkey Taco al pastor, so I tried it. It was goo but nowhere near a real Taco al Pastor.
We also tried the iconic Torta de Pavo. It is so simple a bun, turkey, a slice of cheese and avocado. That’s it!
The experience was good, the place is really close to el Zocalo and it’s good value for money. So I recommend it, but don’t expect a five stars service. It’s and old tiny place and it hasn’t change much in many years. But it’s part of history now.
