Hong Kong Tasteem(3) - Best Breakfast? HK Style Breakfast!

I am so happy to see this topic “Best breakfast” as I am a breakfast lover! I can’t work without a breakfast and I believe breakfast is the most important meal for a day!
So what kind of breakfast will I recommend? In Hong Kong, it’s common to have Chinese, British, Japanese and US style breakfast. But I like HK style breakfast the most! This day, before watching movie Spider-man: Far From Home, I visited a typical HK style restaurant to enjoy a breakfast.

看到這個題目我就興奮了,因為我是早餐愛好者,無早餐不歡,如果那天沒有吃早餐,我實在是不能工作,就算遲了起床,早午餐混成一餐,我也愛趕在十一點前吃早餐。
所以,什麼早餐是最好的早餐?在香港,我們很容易吃到不同類型的早餐:中式的、英式的、日式的、美式的,但對我來說,港式早餐永遠都是最好的!這天,在看電影蜘蛛俠之前,我先來了一間傳統茶餐廳來個早餐。

As it’s Saturday and I was coming at 8am, there were not many people. Let me sit down and order a breakfast. What is the feature of HK style breakfast? I may say fusion and choices. HK breakfast was greatly influenced by British breakfast + style of different country. In the past, HK people were proud of having a British breakfast but most of them couldn’t afford a real British breakfast. So restaurants provided a “cheap” version of British breakfast to poor people.

Eventually, HK style breakfasts absorbed different foods from different countries and mixed them to its own style. Classic examples include satay beef (Southeast Asia) instant noodle (Japan), Cha Siu (Chinese) spaghetti (Italian).

由於是週末,加上我一早八點就來了,餐廳倒是沒有什麼人,那就先坐下點個早餐吧!港式早餐的特色是什麼?就是大雜燴!港式早餐最主要是受英式早餐影響,由英式早餐演變而成。在以前,香港人多以能享受英式早餐為榮,但大多人都不能負擔英式早餐的價錢,因為茶餐廳便推出了「便宜」版的英式早餐。
慢慢地,港式早餐吸納越來越多不同地區的特色,融合到港式早餐,就如偏東南亞的沙爹牛肉配上日式公仔面,和廣東叉燒搭上意大利粉。

Since to rapid economic growth of HK, people became busy. They wanted to have different food for breakfast but they don’t want to spend time to consider where to eat. HK restaurant then added different choices to the menu. That’s why we have breakfast A, breakfast B, breakfast C and so on.

自香港經濟急促發展,香港人節奏加速,生活繁忙。他們想每一餐都吃一點不同的東西,但又不想花時間去想去哪吃,又想要快!所以茶餐廳的早餐種類越變越多,變成了現在的ABCDE餐。

But, the one I ordered today is the most classic HK style breakfast, and is always breakfast A in all restaurant. Why is it the most classic? I can’t find any source of it. But every one in HK what’s breakfast A stand for. It becomes a custom. So it includes a macaroni soup with ham:

不過眾多款式之中,我點的這一個肯定是最經典的,它永遠都是任何茶餐廳的A餐!為何那麼經典?我都找不到來源了,不過講到早餐A餐,每個香港人都知道是什麼,這已是一種傳統。這早餐A有什麼?首先是火腿通粉:

So it’s just a simple dish, using chicken powder as soup.

很簡單的菜式,金華火腿、快熟通心粉,再用雞粉造成湯。

Then we have double fried egg with mini bun. We can choose poached egg or scrambled egg also. Just tell the waiter is ok. But Sunny-side-up is also the most classic one.

然後是雙蛋餐包。這雙蛋可選荷包蛋或炒蛋,跟侍應說就行了,但最經典的,還是太陽蛋。

One more funny thing: usually knife is not provided in HK style restaurant. So we need to use a spoon as the knife. But it’s easy to operate ha!

有趣的是,港式茶餐廳不多不提供刀,我們要以匙代刀!不過對用兩根竹子也能吃飯的中國人來說,這有何難!

You may think it’s just a simple breakfast and nothing special. Yes I agree. But for me, it’s the best breakfast. It’s not only food, but also custom, tradition and culture. A HK style breakfast A, always give me full power for the whole day!

你或會認為這早餐很簡單,很普通嘛,我同意。不過,這個早餐A已不止是一份早餐,更是一份傳統、一份文化、一種情意結。一個早餐A,總能給我一天滿滿的能量!
