Saman Dance is a dance that comes from Gayo tribe, Aceh. Usually this dance is performed to celebrate important events in adat. The poem uses Gayo Language. This dance is also featured to celebrate the birth of Prophet Muhammad SAW.
Saman dance was developed by Syekh Saman, a cleric from Gayo, Southeast Aceh. This dance began to be developed in the 14th century. Saman dance is one of the media for the achievement of the message or da'wah. This dance reflects education, religion, manners, heroism, cohesiveness, and togetherness.
Initially, saman dance is only played by men. The number is not more than 10 people, 8 as a dancer and 2 as a giver of cue. But in its development, this dance may be played by more than 10 dancers. This is because they realize that the more crowded dancers, the more interesting saman dance. In addition, women who initially should not play this dance, also be allowed to play it.
Usually, saman dance does not require a musical instrument accompaniment. This dance is only accompanied by the sound of the dancers and their applause. It is then combined with a chest and groin strike as a counterweight and flung the body in different directions.
This dance is guided by a leader called a sheikh. Because uniformity of formation and timeliness is a must in performing this dance, then the dancers must have a high concentration. They have to practice seriously in order to perform perfectly.
