The AMX AC mle 46
"AC" stands for "Auto-Canon," which is the French designation for any turretless self-propelled gun. The modele 1946 is built on the AMX M4 chassis (must specify AMX, otherwise it could get confused with a rather ubiquitous American medium tank in use at the same time), and closely resembles the German Panzerjäger V, or Jagdpanther. I had, initially, thought about delaying this post until I had a fully articulated model, but given the tiny clearances required for that (and some other geometry problems), I don't think I'm going to have one made any time soon. However, even my solid model has quite a bit of detail, so I will share that here (and I just now remembered that I forgot to turn off the extra gun barrel thickness to meet printing requirements in 1/285 scale... whatever):
Notice that I say this resembles the Jagdpanther... maybe the hull does, but those two enormous cuppolas on top are not common among German vehicles. That's because there is no coaxial machine or hull gun, and instead a machine gun is placed in an egg-shaped cuppola on top of the casemate. The commander's cuppola, meanwhile, has an integrated housing for a coincidence rangefinder. Neither appears to rotate, but the commander's cuppola must rotate in order to be of any use with a gun that can traverse 10 degrees to the right and 7 to the left.
Here are some photos of the AMX AC mle 46 sitting in the collection:
Yes, that's a Sherman Firefly in the upper right corner of the bottom picture.
