Last weekend I had the opportunity to attend one of the most outstanding theater productions that can be seen on the national billboard at the moment, both for the text and for the quality of the two actors that keep the spectator attentive to the complex narrative thread and to the diversity of approaches that from religion, philosophy and psychology this work offers for the reflection and analysis of the perspective of every viewer in the face of spiritual life and human relationships.

The pleasure was greater when counting the cast with the presence of Luis de Tavira, who is one of the most important directors in Mexico with more than one hundred theater productions nationally and also abroad, has also been a teacher of many formidable generations of actors who went through the schools in whose foundation he has participated, such as the University Theater Center of the UNAM (CUT), The Theater's House or the Theater Studies Nucleum (NET). De Tavira has also dedicated himself to the training of theater directors and is currently a professor in the Master studies at ESAY, here in Mérida, Yucatán.

The fundamentalist, a work written by the Finnish playwright Juha Jokela in 2006 and directed by the Spanish director Ignacio García, presents the reunion of Marcos a priest who has gained some fame for the publication of books considered advanced by the progressive wing of the Church and scandalous on the more conservative side, which has earned him the name of the "Reverend scandal". And Heidi, a woman who thirty years ago was a young girl who attended all parish activities and youth camps led by Marcos. The last time they saw each other, they were in a confuse situation that Marcos interpreted as seduction but only got Heidi to disappear from his life until a couple of years ago. When she returned Marcos was already a priest famous for his publications but she had become a religious fanatic belonging to the Church of the Living Word and also wife of the spiritual guide of that congregation.

In this reunion both characters try to convince each other of the error in their system of beliefs, he considering that she has been manipulated and she considering that he acts under the influence of the devil. Their constant talks between theological principles and prayers lead them to unravel the passionate impulse of the past that had once separated them but that this time leads them to lose themselves and leave aside the convictions that each one had, transforming their lives radically and not in the way that each one had thought. In the end we find two unarmed beings trying to find the meaning of their lives and all the experiences they have been through.

Without a doubt Luis de Tavira, who having started his theatrical career as an actor had not performed in many years, offers us important lessons about this art through his presence in the stage, thus endorsing all the pedagogical discourse by which he is famous in all the performing art schools in Mexico. For those who know Luis de Tavira it will be clear that this character comes perfect for him for the quality and complexity of his reasoning when he teaches, but also for the gestures he achieves incarnating this priest who has decided after his unfortunate disencounter to leave the clergy. Aurora Cano, another important actress, director and Mexican theater producer, is completely up to this challenge and offers an excellent counterpart in the stage playing with the different nuances that go from the young girl to the fanatic woman who tries to save at all costs the soul of the "Reverend scandal". A space design and stage direction that allow us to appreciate the complex work of the actors complete this staging by emphasizing the synthetic without neglecting the aesthetic precision.

Although the work has certainly a bitter end, it is still hopeful that we are proposed to seek for ourselves that meaning and end through which our lives go in this world full of contradictions. We will always have to be aware of the different manipulations that the diverse systems of ideas in which we are immersed do not end up imposing their interests on our backs but we must not leave aside our constant search and spiritual development, which from any perspective or ideology to which it belongs implies a healthy and personal dialogue with the divinity, with God or with that idea of immensity that surrounds us and from which we are definitely part and is present in each of our steps, since we are born until the last abode.

Very nicely done @leveuf. I enjoyed reading about this play, seeing it "through your eyes." You've generated an excellent review of it, for the consideration of others. I appreciate the effort you have gone to, in both writing in your native language, as well as in English. I hope you enjoy the support for your efforts they deserve.

I personally really enjoy creations of man that attempt to get us to think. And think deeply ... There is so much to life these days (at least here in America) which can seem so superficial. From your review, this play appears to try and get its audience to think deeply. About profound questions of great importance ...

Your post does leave me wondering, though, ...

"Although the work has certainly a bitter end ..."

... about the details associated with this statement. Will there be future posts written about this play?

Thank you very much for this visit and comment @Roleerob! It's a pleasure having you enjoying of this publications about theater. This play was interesting for me precisely because it give us that opportunity to think in our own system of ideas and the relation with our reality and how this reality depends on our own convictions, those that we obtain through experience and reflection, the criteria, reasoning and beliefs that make us strong in front of the spins, branches and contradictions in our life.

... about the details associated with this statement. Will there be future posts written about this play?

It is not common to speak about the ending (spoiler) of a story in a commentary publication!! ;) But I can tell you that life changes drastically for these two characters whose paths will be linked by past, dependencies and decisions. In the end of this production you even get some confusion of who was who in all the witnessed experience.

I send you many hugs and wishes for joy in everyday, there are Good Winds traveling to you to reveal all the beauties present in your way!!

PS Please @Roleerob as I'm not English speaking person any advise about redaction that you think will help will be much appreciated. I can learn a lot (as I'm already doing from reading you) from a skilled writer like you!!

Yes sir, excellent point @leveuf ...

"It is not common to speak about the ending (spoiler) of a story in a commentary publication!! ;)"

... as my lack of experience with reviews clearly shows through here. You are wanting to entice others to consider seeing this play, which you thought of very highly. So ... My question then is withdrawn. 😉

As for this ...

"... as I'm not English speaking person any advise about redaction that you think will help will be much appreciated."

... while very comfortable writing in my own native language, I have zero experience (so no knowledge base from which to draw ...) with trying to communicate in another one. Actually, that is not entirely true, as (long, long ago ...) I had 3 years each, of classes in both Spanish and German. If my life depended on it right now, however, I would not be able to say much of anything in either of these languages ...

A commentary on the quality of our education system? A commentary on how much interest I genuinely had in it, beyond getting good grades (an A student in both ...)? Well, I don't know. Maybe the fact this was approximately 50 years ago, with no practice since then may have something to do with it ... 😉

Seriously, I think you are doing your best. And like any other endeavor we choose to undertake, we all get better with time and effort. You are already doing okay and can be understood pretty well.

If I have any questions on future content, I'll be sure and raise them, before drawing any firm conclusions. Since I will know they may be off based on a bit of a difference in our languages and culture.

More simply stated, I will always endeavor to give you the benefit of the doubt ... 😊

You are really wise, a wizard indeed!! 😉 I liked this comment and how you made me travel to your student times, I have no doubts that you were an A+!! I trust you will tell me if any strange meaning or misspelling occurs in my English writing! Recently I was commenting in a post about sleep and I was about to say that I often take "snaps" in the afternoon... instead of "naps" 😁 That would sound very odd, luckily I checked it!!
I send my hugs and wishes for a new day with much Light with you my Friend, may it brings you great experiences and much Love!!

Yes, well my dear friend @leveuf, another “w” word …

”You are really wise, a wizard indeed!!”

You are quite liberal with your attributions to me of character traits I aspire to have, but they are most definitely life long “works in progress” … 😉 Wisdom is the greatest attribute we can have, in my humble opinion. And, as I wrote to you a few days ago, when commenting on “wizard,” my words then are even more applicable to this attribute …

Brings to mind a lifetime memory. In my “old life,” I traveled extensively. In my travels, once switching from an airplane to a car, I would typically try to find a good Christian radio station in whatever part of North America I was driving through. Invariably, I would find J. Vernon McGee faithfully carrying out the divine mission he had been assigned. I never wearied hearing all that he was inspired to say.

One evening, he said this:

”As a younger man, I knew everything …”

As an older man now, I find I know very little …”

He went to elaborate, in a very eloquent and powerful manner, on the essential point of what man is prone to – pride. And what he had, over a long and fruitful life, been brought to – humility.

I hope you and yours are well @leveuf. May the true source of all that is good bless you with a fruitful and productive day!

The reading of the King Solomon was a great gift for these days dear @Roleerob, it's impressive how much one can learn in just a few words. And of course Vernon McGee sounds like the best of the philosophers. Your story remembers me that immortal phrase by Socrates: "I know that I know nothing". That is the most common problem for knowledge, as your knowledge grow your sense of all that you ignore also rises. But that's the fuel for brilliant and curious people, they're always going forward to find some answer.
Thanks for share whit me those important moments of life, the many ideas and good advises from the Holy Book are much appreciated giving good background to our conversation.
I send many hugs and my wishes for a brilliant day, @Roleerob! May Good Winds bring you every time closer to Wisdom! Much Light for you and your loved ones!!!

Yes, indeed @leveuf ...

"... it's impressive how much one can learn in just a few words."

... yes, indeed. My life forever changed when I began to truly see that in His word to us. Uncompromising, absolute statements of life-giving power ...

"That is the most common problem for knowledge, as your knowledge grow your sense of all that you ignore also rises."

For this man, I have long since resolved that whatever intelligence I have and, through the application of it, knowledge obtained is not to be confused with being wise and obtaining wisdom. I do not believe wisdom and knowledge are synonymous.

Well, I could say a lot more here, but need to get on with another full day ... It is always very nice to be able to share some perspectives with you, my good friend. Perhaps there will be more available time in the future ...

Until "next time," all the best to you!

A vast theme that requires time when it's the Time!! But let me tell you at least something you can agree with me, you are a good man in the deepest sense of this term. Your heart is great @Roleerob and even "in here" anyone can see.
Let's give its Time to every important matter in life!
Many blessings for you and your family, dear Friend!! 🤗 🌄

Saludos.
