Tell Me Something (Korean): not that great

in #getyerlearnon6 years ago

This was on some list that i read of Korean films that I must see because it was a psychological thriller of sorts but as much as I like Korean movies this one was not that great. Maybe it is better if you can speak Korean fluently but as far as the English translation is concerned.... the movie wasn't shocking, it wasn't surprising, and it wasn't very good.

So the movie starts out trying to captivate all of us by having gruesome scenes of people having limbs removed by well, someone that clearly knows what they are doing because there is a scalpel involved and it is surgical and what not.

A bunch of gruesome murders are performed in Seoul again and the detectives are brought in to try to figure out what happens. One of the girls (who is loosely related to the murders) ends up staying with one of the detectives and tries her best to help the police force figure out what is going on.

The police are exceptionally useless in their jobs and this is most evident in 2 situations that happen during the film.

  • The same detective is attacked by a car and run down on the side of the road. He is not rendered unconcious yet somehow, despite having lots of time and a flashlight (he was sans gun,) doesn't manage to get a license plate number

  • Another detective discovers a MAJOR part of the story on his own via whatever... it doesn't matter... yet when he enters the place - which is clearly a dangerous spot and filled with information that he and his team have been working on a for a long time he doesn't call in, he doesn't stop outside and wait for backup... he goes at it alone. No one knows he is there and of course he is killed.

This is lazy storytelling in my mind and i expected more and if you are expecting it you will be disappointed as well.

The movie starts out great based on nothing other than good gore (don't be eating when you watch it) and then proceeds to basically do nothing inspiring.

This was on a list of "shocking Korean films' and i wholeheartedly disagree. It isn't shocking, it is very predictable and when the "shocking" ending is revealed.... you, as the viewer, don't care

horrible trailer translation but it isn't a great film so that is ok. This movie was boring, predictable and aside from a bit of the gore that was well-executed, i see no reason to watch it at all, especially if you have to read the subtitles to know what is going on.

3.5 / 10 I feel as though I am being generous

Sort:

The Korean film-industry is without a doubt one of the most interesting and fun to watch in the world today. Titles like the haunting and oddly fascinating "Salinui chueok" (Memories of Murder) and the half-cool/half-turkey "Tube" spring to mind. You never really know what you'll get when you sit down to watch a South Korean film today, but "Tell Me Something" is an example of a movie that has a lot of things going for it but in the end leaves you more confused than satisfied.

Now I rarely have a hard time following the plot of a serial-killer movie (of recent ones I found the US thriller "Taking Lives" an insult to my intelligence as I could figure out it's every move a mile away), but "Tell Me Something" demands a lot from it's viewer. I suspect the language barrier is partly to blame, as I got the feeling some clues must have been left out in the subtitles, but the director obviously could have done a better job. I give him an A+ for it's grisly, stylish look but an F for his lack of explaining several loose ends in the plot.

I prefer their kung-fu fights and their sad tales love stories. Guess, they have areas that they are good at and need to improve in other areas as well.

Hahahaha 3.5/10? Thats gross. Wouldnt even wana give it a try.

Well, like you rightly said, maybe the translation messed it up. Sometimes, following what they are saying properly goes a long way in helping you understand the movie better.

I stay with the fights of kung fu are very good in them I am a faithful fan to those movies

Hi gooddream. In other words it is not crap but close. One too miss. I watched a couple like that over the weekend. Acts of Violence and a Tom Berenger shocker Wunderland. Don't think Wunderland had a big budget as it was about The Battle of the Bulge and there were only 3 tanks in it.

For you to score the movie 3.5 / 10 which is very poor shows that the movie does not worth spend precious time to watch. Maybe the movie storyline was not well organize and the director of the movie did a poor job @goiddream
