Los Antiguos (parte 6)

―Hay al menos ochocientos edificios de diferentes dimensiones ―explicaba Saul, a un grupo de treinta catedráticos y sus estudiantes que conformaban el equipo que exploraría las ciudades alienígenas―. Sin embargo, al parecer toda la ciudad parece estar construida en torno a esta edificación.

En la pantalla se proyectó la imagen de un edificio de forma esférica, que ante los reflectores de las sondas brillaba con tonos azules. A su derredor había varias construcciones más pequeñas que formaban la figura de un pentágono, de cuyos vértices partían líneas, que servían de guía para delimitar la ciudad en cinco sectores, dentro de los cuales los edificios parecían estar ubicados sin un orden particular.

―No podremos permanecer por más de diez horas continuas en la superficie del planeta, y si alguien se siente especialmente cansado, empieza a sufrir taquicardia, mareos o le falta el aire, por favor retírese con el equipo médico, que decidirá si puede continuar o es preferible que regrese a la estación.

―¿Sólo seremos nosotros treinta doctor? ―preguntó un joven con aspecto de desorientado.

―Por el momento sólo nosotros, el equipo médico, un equipo de ingenieros que evaluará la seguridad de las estructuras y también nos acompañará la doctora Faith Ibrahimovic, de la academia de Niobe, quien se encargará de recabar y analizar cualquier muestra biológica que pueda hallarse y de asesorarnos respecto a las posibles estructuras morfológicas de los antiguos habitantes y como se verían representadas en su arquitectura ―respondió Saul ―. En total seremos cuarenta y tres miembros del equipo científico, quienes descenderemos al planeta, no tengo idea aun del tamaño del componente militar de la expedición. También nos acompañarán cuarenta androides militares de exploración, que recorrerán la ciudad enviando imágenes que serán estudiadas por un equipo aquí en la estación.

―¿Cuándo partiremos señor? ―dijo el mismo joven.

―En este momento el componente militar debe estar saliendo a tomar posición, instalar los refugios herméticos y desplegaran los androides de exploración ―continuó Saul ―. Nosotros saldremos en quince horas, cuando el primer grupo de militares regrese, partiremos con el siguiente grupo.

Veinte horas más tarde descendieron en una pequeña nave de desembarco militar, a los cuarenta y tres miembros del grupo científico, lo acompañaba un pelotón del ejército, proveniente de las tropas asignadas a la búsqueda de Andrómeda, cuya misión había sido aplazada, motivado a este descubrimiento.

Sobre la superficie congelada, justo frente al edificio por el que iniciarían su exploración, habían sido instalados, uno al lado de otro, tres refugios herméticos, lo suficientemente grandes como para albergar a cuarenta personas cada uno, además de un pequeño refugio médico para atender cualquier necesidad. Al frente de las entradas de los refugios se encontraban aparcados cuatro octópodos

Al descender de la nave pudieron presenciar personalmente el edificio central de la ciudad, se trataba de una descomunal estructura, más grande que cualquiera que conocieran, en si mismo podría hacer sido una colonia de un tamaño muy respetable, desde los estándares humanos.

―Bien, es más grande en persona de lo que parece en las imágenes y planos ―comentó Saul, por el comunicador, a los silenciosos exploradores ―. Ya veo para que necesitamos los octópodos.

―¿Cómo entraremos? ―preguntó Rebeca Vélez, una de las estudiantes colaboradoras de Saul.

―Es lo primero que deberemos averiguar, para eso están nuestros amigos los ingenieros― dijo, señalando a un pequeño grupo de cuatro individuos, enfundados en trajes herméticos color naranja ―. Ellos nos acompañarán en todo momento. Nos separaremos en cuatro grupos de seis, para entrar a explorar el edificio, a cada grupo lo acompañará uno de nuestros amigos ―dijo, señalando nuevamente a los ingenieros ―. Usaremos los octópodos para poder recorrer mayor distancia y minimizar el gasto físico.

Aunque los trajes herméticos los aislaban por completo del entorno exterior, proporcionándoles calor, presión atmosférica y aire respirable, no podían aislarlos de la intensa, para los estándares humanos, gravedad del planeta. Desde la era de Perseo, los humanos jamás habían habitado en un planeta con una gravedad superior al sesenta por ciento la de la Tierra, siendo lo común poblar planetas con gravedades de entre el cuarenta y cincuenta por ciento de la de su antiguo hogar.

Este planeta tenía una gravedad un veinte porciento mayor a la gravedad terrestre, por lo que, al abandonar la atenuación gravitacional de la cabina de la nave de transporte, sintieron el impacto de tener algo más del doble de su peso, lo que de inmediato estuvo a punto de hacer colapsar a algunos miembros de la expedición. Por fortuna para ellos, para atenuar el impacto de la gravedad del planeta, sus trajes herméticos contaban con un esqueleto interno de asistencia, para disminuir la carga sobre sus cuerpos y ayudar a sus músculos y articulaciones a resistir su nuevo peso.

―Ok, formen equipos, los doctores Torres y Da Silva se encargarán de liderizar dos equipos ―prosiguió Saul, refiriéndose a sus dos compañeros, catedráticos de Palas ―. Y me gustaría que el doctor Carducci de la academia de Heracles, dirigiera otro equipo, yo me encargaré del último.

―Con gusto Saul ―afirmó Ismael Carducci, quien había conocido a Saul cuarenta años antes, en un congreso en Heracles y desde entonces habían entablado buena amistad.

―De acuerdo, prepárense todos, tomen un octópodo y empecemos a buscar como entrar al edificio, los que no entren en un equipo, se quedarán afuera y asistidos por robots de compañía, empezarán a recorrer los alrededores, recogiendo muestras ―dijo señalando hacia el edificio ―. Empecemos con esto, que no tenemos mucho tiempo.

-There are at least eight hundred buildings of different sizes, - Saul explained to a group of thirty professors and their students who made up the team that would explore the alien cities-. However, the whole city seems to be built around this building.

On the screen, the image of a spherical building was projected, which shone in blue in front of the probe reflectors. Around it were several smaller constructions that formed the figure of a pentagon, from whose vertices lines emerged, which served as a guide to delimit the city into five sectors, within which the buildings seemed to be located without any particular order.

-We cannot stay for more than ten hours continuously on the surface of the planet, and if anyone feels particularly tired, begins to suffer from tachycardia, dizziness, or shortness of breath, please leave with the medical team who will decide whether you can continue or should return to the station.

-Will it only be us thirty doctors? -asked a disoriented looking young man.

-For the moment it is just us, the medical team, a team of engineers who will assess the safety of the structures and will also be accompanied by Dr. Faith Ibrahimovic of the Niobe Academy who will be responsible for collecting and analyzing any biological samples that may be found and advising us on the possible morphological structures of the ancient inhabitants and how they would be represented in their architecture, - answered Saul -. There will be a total of 43 members of the scientific team, who will descend to the planet, I have no idea yet of the size of the military component of the expedition. We will also be accompanied by forty military exploration androids, who will tour the city sending images that will be studied by a team here at the station.

-When will we leave, sir? -said the young man himself.

Twenty hours later they descended in a small military landing craft, the forty-three members of the scientific group were accompanied by a platoon of the army, coming from the troops assigned to the search for Andromeda, whose mission had been postponed, motivated by this discovery.

On the frozen surface, just in front of the building where they would begin their exploration, three hermetic shelters had been installed, one next to the other, large enough to house forty people each, as well as a small medical shelter to attend to any need. Four octupods were parked in front of the entrances to the shelters

As they descended from the ship they could personally witness the central building of the city, it was a huge structure, bigger than any they knew, in itself it could make a very respectable size colony, from the human standards.

-Well, it's bigger in person than it looks in the pictures and plans, -saul commented, over the communicator, to the silent explorers. -I see what we need the octupods for.

-How do we get in? -asked Rebeca Velez, one of Saul's student collaborators.

-It' s the first thing we must find out, that' s what our friends the engineers are for, - he said, pointing to a small group of four individuals in orange watertight suits -. They will accompany us at all times. Although the airtight suits completely insulated them from the outside environment, providing them with heat, atmospheric pressure and breathable air, they could not insulate them from the intense, by human standards, gravity of the planet. Since the age of Perseus, humans had never inhabited a planet with a gravity greater than sixty percent that of the earth, the commonplace being to populate planets with gravities between forty and fifty percent that of their former home.

This planet had a gravity twenty percent greater than the earth's gravity, so when they left the gravitational attenuation of the transport ship's cabin, they felt the impact of having just over twice their weight, which immediately nearly caused some members of the expedition to collapse. Fortunately for them, to lessen the impact of the planet's gravity, their waterproof suits had an internal skeleton assist, to lessen the load on their bodies and help their muscles and joints resist their new weight.

-Okay, form teams, Dr. Torres and Dr. Da Silva will lead two teams, - Saul continued, referring to his two colleagues, professors of Palas -. And I would like Dr. Carducci from the academy of Heracles, to lead another team, I will take care of the last one.
