El mundo del Silencio

La comunicación siempre ha sido un tema de interés común, en especial para aquellos que deciden transmitir de la forma más efectiva posible, cualquier mensaje que considere relevante, o le proporcione beneficios al difundirse en la sociedad. No es difícil imaginar cómo han sido los avances en el ámbito de la comunicación en los últimos milenios, pasamos de expresarnos con señas y sonidos un tanto onomatopéyicos, a expresarnos en aéreas tan extensas como el arte, el cine, la escritura, entre otros. Utilizando como medio principal el idioma que dominemos, para hacernos entender entre un grupo específico de personas.

Lamentablemente este no era el caso de las creaturas que habitaban Gliese 581 hace algunos millones de años. Desafortunadamente el aire este planeta era lo suficientemente denso como para perimir el desarrollo de cuerdas vocales eficientes y realmente útiles en el tiempo de vida de estas creaturas. La evolución involucra necesariamente cambios, cambios orientados a transformar las interacciones del individuo con su ambiente, haciéndolo mucho más llevadero y prolongando su esperanza de vida lo suficiente para tener cierta certeza o probabilidad de que la próxima evolución ocurrirá de forma sucesiva. Un cambio estructural en la cavidad que estas creaturas utilizaban para alimentarse, pudiera haber significado la aparición de una nueva habilidad: La habilidad de emitir sonidos.

Pasaron muchos años antes de que ellos mismo se dieran cuenta de lo limitados que estaban debido al ambiente que los rodeaba. Habían evolucionado a tal punto, que ya podían ser considerados seres pensantes, pioneros en grandes desarrollos matemáticos y filosóficos para su tiempo, y con una proyección hacia el éxito en el futuro. Sin embargo, todo esto lo habían logrado, sin tener ninguna habilidad que les permitiera comunicarse entre sí con ondas sonoras. El planeta carecía de sonidos proveniente de la vida.

Ninguna de las otras especies fue capaz de desarrollar en su largo camino evolutivo, la habilidad de poder hacer vibrar sus cuerdas vocales en tan denso aire que las rodeaba. Incluso algunas especies prescindían de esta parte del cuerpo, ya que al no ser necesaria en su vida, poco a poco iba desapareciendo en cada generación nueva. El silencio reinaba, solo se escuchaban algunos sonidos relacionados al área industrial, tecnológica y científica. Grandes maquinas podían golpear el suelo y hacerse sentir a varios kilómetros a la redonda, algunos experimentos químicos, lograban reaccionar con tal nivel de violencia que perturbaba el aire que estaba a su alrededor, y como estos fenómenos mecánicos, muchos otros…

Pareciera imposible pensar en cómo una civilización ha llegado a tal punto de desarrollo sin tener la necesidad de comunicarse de forma directa. Lo cierto es que si se comunicaban de forma directa, pero lo hacían mediante su especifico y peculiar lenguaje escrito, el cual estaba diseñado para ser lo más especifico posible con el menor número de palabras involucradas, definitivamente aplicaban muy bien el concepto de economía lingüística. Aunado a ellos, tenían un lenguaje coloquial, utilizado mayormente entre amigos o relaciones de confianza, otras veces en casos de emergencia. Este lenguaje alterno estaba constituido por señas, las cuales eran ejecutadas por algunas de sus extremidades. Fue el lenguaje más difícil de diseñar para ellos, ya que no era para nada trivial, encontrar movimientos asociados a sus extremidades capaces de expresar conceptos tan profundos como el presente, pasado, futuro, los condicionales, temas abstractos como el tiempo y su concepción, entre otros… Aun así, era bastante útil si e deseaba comunicar algo muy concreto, simple y directo, por lo tanto era común ver a los seres de esta especie comunicarse de forma escrita, y regularmente hacer ciertos movimientos con mucho fervor.

La sociedad avanzaba, y con ella las interacciones individuales. Las actividades de recreación eran llevadas a cabo de forma regular, estos seres podían divertirse, pelear, amar, reír, vivir, todo mediante su inseparable pantalla que les permitía escribir y leer los mensajes en una conversación. La escritura era rápida y fluida, aunque algunos tenían ciertos problemas de comunicación asociado a la morfología de las letras que escribían. Sin obstáculo alguno, el planeta entró en una etapa de constante crecimiento, en donde la tecnología estaba dirigida a facilitar los procesos diarios, y contemplaba como vía rápida y eficiente de publicidad, grandes carteles ilustrativos.

Una habilidad destacada en estas creaturas, era su gran capacidad visual, que les permitía entender las señas que hacían sus compañeros, a grandes distancias, sin ningún problema, sin errores de interpretación. Esta ventaja era aprovechada al máximo en escenarios como la construcción, en los cuales los trabajadores eran capaces de sincronizarse para transmitir ordenes muy básicas, como subir, bajar, izquierda, derecha, alto, sigue… Sin embargo no era del todo útil cuando se trataba de contextos de alta especificidad, como pudieran serlos laboratorios de investigación, industrias de alto nivel, órganos políticos y ejecutivos, entre muchos otros… La vida para ellos se dividía en dos, en lo simple y en lo completo, en los escenarios propicios para señas, y en lo que solo se admiten caracteres escritos.

Un día que debía llegar, de forma inesperada, desato en las noticias globales la descripción de un gran desastre ambiental provocado por una de los generadores de energía más potentes que habían logrado construir hasta esa fecha. El planeta pronto se lleno de un oscuro polvo de ceniza, que permaneció suspendido en el ya denso aire de ese planeta. Esta gran nube que opacaba el campo visual de cualquiera de ellos, no solo representaba un desastre energético de escalas inimaginables, sino que también los limitaban en la lectura de las pantallas que utilizaban para comunicarse. En este escenario de tinieblas, era mucho más viable las señas, ya que su piel ligeramente fluorescente, les permitía captar el mensaje de una formas bastante exacta. La contaminación en el aire duro milenios. Las creaturas se acostumbraron a su nuevo sistema de comunicación sencillo, pero al ser este bastante simple y carente de profundidad en los conceptos que con él se podían transmitir, su vida se fue simplificando cada vez más. Con el pasar de 1000 generación, el lenguaje era prácticamente primitivo. La flecha de la evolución había cambiado de sentido, y tan solo unos cientos de años después de la catástrofe, se observan a las creaturas viviendo por instinto y no por raciocinio.

Communication has always been a subject of common interest, especially for those who decide to convey as effectively as possible, any message that they consider relevant, or provide benefits by spreading in society. It is not difficult to imagine how the advances in the field of communication have been in the last millennia, we go from expressing ourselves with signs and sounds somewhat onomatopoeic, to expressing ourselves in areas as extensive as art, cinema, writing, among others. Using as main medium the language we master, to make us understand among a specific group of people.

Unfortunately this was not the case of the creatures that inhabited Gliese 581 a few million years ago. Unfortunately the air on this planet was dense enough to perish the development of efficient and really useful vocal cords in the lifetime of these creatures. Evolution necessarily involves changes, changes aimed at transforming the individual's interactions with his environment, making it much more bearable and prolonging his life expectancy long enough to have some certainty or probability that the next evolution will occur successively. A structural change in the cavity that these creatures used to feed on could have meant the appearance of a new ability: the ability to emit sounds.

Many years passed before they themselves realized how limited they were due to the environment around them. They had evolved to such an extent that they could now be considered thinking beings, pioneers in great mathematical and philosophical developments for their time, and with a projection toward future success. However, all this they had achieved, without having any ability that would allow them to communicate with each other with sound waves. The planet lacked sounds from life.

None of the other species was able to develop in their long evolutionary journey the ability to vibrate their vocal cords in such dense air around them. Some species even dispensed with this part of the body, as it was not necessary in their life, but gradually disappeared in each new generation. Silence reigned, only some sounds related to the industrial, technological and scientific area were heard. Large machines could hit the ground and make themselves felt several kilometers around, some chemical experiments, managed to react with such a level of violence that disturbed the air around them, and like these mechanical phenomena, many others...

It seems impossible to think of how a civilization has reached such a point of development without the need to communicate directly. The truth is that if they communicated directly, but they did so through their specific and peculiar written language, which was designed to be as specific as possible with as few words involved, they definitely applied the concept of linguistic economy very well. In addition to them, they had a colloquial language, used mostly among friends or trusting relationships, sometimes in cases of emergency. This alternative language was constituted by signs, which were executed by some of their extremities. It was the most difficult language to design for them, since it was not at all trivial, to find movements associated with their extremities capable of expressing concepts as deep as the present, past, future, conditionals, abstract subjects such as time and its conception, among others... Even so, it was quite useful if you wanted to communicate something very concrete, simple and direct, therefore it was common to see the beings of this species communicate in written form, and regularly make certain movements with great fervor.

Society advanced, and with it individual interactions. Recreational activities were carried out regularly, these beings could have fun, fight, love, laugh, live, all through its inseparable screen that allowed them to write and read messages in a conversation. Writing was fast and fluid, although some had certain communication problems associated with the morphology of the letters they wrote. Without any obstacle, the planet entered a stage of constant growth, where technology was aimed at facilitating daily processes, and contemplated as a fast and efficient way of advertising, large illustrative posters.

An outstanding skill in these creatures was their great visual capacity, which allowed them to understand the signs made by their companions, at great distances, without any problem, without errors of interpretation. This advantage was exploited to the maximum in scenarios such as construction, in which workers were able to synchronize to transmit very basic commands, such as up, down, left, right, high... However, it was not entirely useful when it came to contexts of high specificity, such as research laboratories, high-level industries, political and executive bodies, among many others... Life for them was divided in two, in the simple and in the complete, in the proper scenarios for signs, and in what only written characters are admitted.

One day, unexpectedly, the description of a great environmental disaster caused by one of the most powerful power generators they had managed to build up to that date was released in the global news. The planet was soon filled with a dark ash dust, which remained suspended in the already dense air of that planet. This great cloud that opaque the visual field of any of them not only represented an energy disaster of unimaginable scales, but also limited them in the reading of the screens they used to communicate. In this scenario of darkness, the signs were much more viable, since their slightly fluorescent skin allowed them to capture the message in quite exact ways. Hard air pollution millennia. The creatures became accustomed to its new system of simple communication, but since it was quite simple and lacked depth in the concepts that could be transmitted with it, their life was simplified more and more. With the passing of 1000 generations, language was practically primitive. The arrow of evolution had changed direction, and only a few hundred years after the catastrophe, creatures are observed living by instinct and not by reason.
