Samurai Swords throughout History

in #swords7 years ago

Samurai swords are traditionally made Japanese swords or Nihonto.

One of the most famous Japanese swords is the Samurai Katana. The Katana is characterized by its curved single edged blade. It has a square or circular guard and has a long grip to accommodate two hands. The evolution of the Tachi into what is referred to as Katana was in response to the Samurai development to wear their sword with the cutting edge up thus allowing to withdraw the sword and attack in a single motion.

The Samurai Katana was often paired with a shorter sword like a Wakizashi or Tanto and it was used as an auxiliary sword. In Feudal Japan, Only Samurai could wear these pair of swords known as Daisho. It represented the Samurai social standing and power as a warrior. The Samurai or bushi were warriors of pre-modern Japan. Later on they became the ruling military class being the highest ranking social caste during the Edo period. Although the Samurai use different sets of weapons, the Katana is said to be their weapon of choice.

The Samurai can trace their origins to the Heian period where they were tasked to subdue the native Emishi people from the Tohoku region. In the same time period, wealthy landowners hired them to be part of the armies that will protect them. These landowners have grown independent of the central ruling government. After the most powerful landowning clans have built a new military government the Samurai ruled over Japan for at least 700 years. The country in chaos was finally reunited in the late 1500s to form a rigid social caste where the Samurai is on the top of the ruling chain. The Samurai were forced to live in castle towns. Those who have no masters were known as Ronin.
