I recently read Dies the Fire by SM Stirling - instead of a zombie apocalypse it's a fantasy where suddenly the world changes somehow so all high energy reactions stop working - it kills electronics, internal combustion, ect. So they're plunged back into the middle ages. Except where are they going to get their steel? Easy, harvest it from the millions of dead cars on the highway.
