Many Crimean cities can boast of their centuries-old history, but Kerch is one of the oldest cities not only in the Crimea, but also in the world - it is only one year younger than the eternal city of Rome, and in 2000 celebrated its 2600th anniversary.

First of all in Kerch all tourists hurry to the famous Mithridates staircase. 432 steps lead to the top of Mount Mithridates, named after the king of the Bosporan kingdom of Mithridates. He constantly strove to expand the boundaries of his possessions, fighting with the mighty Romans. According to legend, being afraid of poisoning, he daily took a small dose of poison to get used to it. In a tragic moment, when he learned that the Romans, led by his own son, were standing at the walls of his state, Mitridat tried to die by taking poison, but alas, fate played a cruel joke with him-poison did not act on the tsar. Then the servant killed his master with a sword.

The staircase was built in 1833-1840. architect Digby. To climb to the top, you have to go through several tiers. On each level there are small observation platforms, from which a beautiful view of the city and the sea opens. Tiers are also decorated with figures of griffins.

At the top of Mount Mithridates stands the Obelisk of Glory and the Eternal Flame is burning. The obelisk was built later, in honor of the liberation of Kerch from the Nazis.

It is from the top of the mountain that the most magnificent view of the city opens.
In addition to the Obelisk of Glory on the slopes of the mountain is another attraction - the ruins of the ancient settlement of Panticapaeum.

Entrance there is completely free, and this, it seems to me, really creates a special, unique atmosphere of touching the antiquity.

To feel the city a bit, you can walk along the main street - Lenin Street. Very neat, well-groomed, pedestrian street, there are many shops, cozy cafes and restaurants.
