Beyond the pollution and cost, one thing that comes up in my work is that the supply in many developing countries, particularly in rural and informal settlements, is limited to nonexistent availability. This, of course, has effects on gender equality issues, amongst other things.

Reusuable, durable products can greatly help with this. One of the major issues beyond distribution is developing ways to keep them sanitary with available resources. For example, if you have to walk 2 km for 5 L of water, have no gauranteed electricity, and little fuel, boiling water is not an option.
