In this series we will discuss various methods of making fire without using conventional items like matches or lighters. Some of these methods will be primitive, whereas others will use uncommon items you wouldn’t normally consider capable of creating fire. Why would you need to know how to start a fire using one of these methods, you ask? Because you never know when you are going to be caught in a serious, life or death situation. A brief look back through history enlightens us to several stories surrounding survival scenarios that ended with fatalities.

Having the knowledge, skills, and ability to start a fire could very well be the difference between life or death in a serious survival situation, especially if the weather is inclement. In cold weather climates, a person must have the ability to maintain core body temperature, or the risk of hypothermia and frostbite is enhanced exponentially. Both of these medical conditions can be hazardous, and even result in fatality. This is the most significant reason you need to have the skills and knowledge to get a fire going under any conditions.

Fire making skills will also be important for cooking food, boiling water, and providing warmth to a temporary shelter. It may also be used as a method of signaling for rescue. In serious, life threatening situations, being able to manufacture signals that can be seen from great distances, may be the very thing that allows a rescue team to find you in time to prevent further injury, or loss of life.

While it is possible, in many cases, to consume raw animal and plant matter during a survival situation, having a fire to cook the food over will provide a layer of familiarity that cannot be overcompensated for. Consuming raw animal material is often considered hazardous to your health, and it does provide a greater potential for causing illness, so it should be avoided if at all possible; even insects will go down better after they’ve been heated over a fire.

In the event you need water, a fire will provide you the ability to boil it as a method of purification, thereby helping ensure it is safe and fit for human consumption. Consuming water from unknown and unproven resources can also be fatal. Water is one of the easiest things to contaminate, and is often the first thing that people in a survival situation consume carelessly. Without a fire the ability to properly purify water is reduced, and the potential for contracting deadly health hazards is increased.

As we can easily see, the need for fire in a survival situation is paramount of coming out alive. In the YouTube video shared below, a simple and easy method of making fire using a battery and gum wrapper is shown. Batteries are something preppers carry in their backpacks at all times, and gum wrappers are a common EDC (Every Day Carry) item that many of us have in a pocket or purse if we chew gum. Have a look and stay tuned for additional content on making fire without matches or a lighter.
